Chapter 8 - The Ambush at the Gates

The SUV’s tires shrieked as Richard whipped the vehicle around the circular fountain at the end of the long, palm-lined driveway. The coastal fog had rolled in thick from the Pacific, wrapping the wrought-iron security gates in a ghostly, shifting shroud. But cutting through the fog was the harsh beam of headlights parked right across the exit.

Victoria stood directly in the center of the road, leaning against the hood of Julian’s silver luxury sedan. In her hands, she held a heavy, hunting rifle—a vintage piece mounted on the study wall that she had somehow managed to retrieve during the chaos inside.

“Stop the car, Richard!” Victoria screamed, her voice cracking with hysterical fury as she raised the barrel of the rifle directly toward the windshield of the oncoming SUV. “You’re not going anywhere! We’ve already wiped your bank accounts, your patents, and your reputation! The board has already signed off on your ouster!”

Richard slammed on the brakes, the ABS grinding furiously as the SUV skidded across the damp pavement, stopping just ten feet from where Victoria stood shaking with adrenaline and rage.

“You’re insane, Victoria!” Richard shouted through the rolled-down driver’s side window, his hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles were stark white. “You think the law won’t touch you just because you hold the passwords? The federal authorities are already monitoring the offshore wire transfers!”

Victoria let out a shrill, mocking laugh. “The authorities? Julian paid off the entire compliance division six months ago! By the time anyone looks at those accounts, we’ll be halfway to the Cayman Islands on a private yacht!”

From the back seat, Maya slowly lifted her head, her face pale but her eyes sharp. She held up her smartphone, which was still recording a live video feed directly to her uncle’s secure cloud server at the federal cyber-crime division. “It’s already too late, Victoria. The live stream has been recording everything since the stairs. The police are already two minutes away.”

Victoria’s face twisted in blind panic. She swung the barrel of the rifle away from the windshield and aimed it directly at the rear passenger window where Maya sat. “I’ll shut you and your stupid little brat up right now!”

Before Victoria’s finger could squeeze the trigger, a dark blur shot out from the passenger-side door of the SUV. Elena tackled Victoria to the wet pavement with bone-crushing force. The hunting rifle discharged harmlessly into the night sky, the deafening crack echoing across the coastal cliffs as the two women tumbled into the manicured hedges beside the gate.

Richard threw the SUV into park and leaped out to pull his daughter from the back seat, holding Maya tight against his chest as the wailing sirens of multiple police cruisers finally pierced the coastal fog, turning the dark night into a flashing storm of red and blue.
