Chapter 3 - Darkness in the Villa

The smart-home system’s interface flickered once, turned a baleful shade of crimson, and then died completely. The recessed ceiling lights snapped off in unison, plunging the sprawling luxury villa into an eerie, suffocating twilight illuminated only by the faint, blue glow of Maya’s smartphone screen. In the sudden stillness, the distant hum of the climate control system ground to a halt, leaving behind an absolute silence that felt heavy with impending violence.

Victoria let out a sharp gasp, her silver dress practically glowing in the dim phosphorescence of the mobile display. “What did you do, Richard? Turn the power back on! Someone is trying to break in!”

“Nobody is breaking in,” Richard said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, calculated register. He tapped the back of his titanium watch twice, using a hardwired emergency override protocol to bypass the smart-home hub. “The local network didn’t crash from a power surge. It was isolated from an internal terminal. Someone in this house just locked down the perimeter doors.”

Elena pulled herself fully to her feet, leaning against the cold concrete pillar for support. Her training as a private security operative—hidden beneath the black-and-white maid uniform—kicked in instantly. She scanned the shadows near the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, her eyes adjusting to the moonlight bleeding through the architectural overhang.

“Mr. Hawthorne, stay back from the glass,” Elena commanded, her tone no longer that of a submissive employee, but of a trained tactical specialist taking command of a compromised zone.

Richard blinked, temporarily distracted from his marital betrayal by the sudden shift in his maid’s demeanor. “What did you say?”

“The perimeter is locked, and the security grid is offline,” Elena repeated, her voice steady and authoritative as she reached behind her back and unzipped a hidden compartment in the lining of her uniform skirt, pulling out a compact tactical flashlight. “Whoever locked us in didn’t want us calling the police. They wanted to trap us here with the evidence.”

Maya whimpered, grabbing the hem of Richard’s turtleneck. “Dad, I’m scared. Why are the doors locked?”

Victoria crossed her arms tightly over her chest, trembling—whether from the sudden drop in temperature or genuine fear was impossible to tell. “This is ridiculous! Elena, you’re just making up stories to cover for your clumsiness. Richard, fire her right now and call the private security agency!”

“Shut up, Victoria,” Richard snapped, his hand gripping his wife’s forearm with enough force to make her cry out. He stared at Elena, the pieces of a puzzle he had ignored for months finally clicking into place. “Who are you, Elena? An eighteen-year-old culinary school graduate doesn’t move like that.”

Elena flicked on the tactical flashlight, casting a sharp, bright beam across the marble foyer. “My name is Elena Vance. I was assigned to this household by your brother’s security firm three months ago to investigate a series of corporate espionage leaks originating from your private office.”

Victoria’s face drained of every trace of color, her mouth opening in a silent shriek as the lights suddenly flickered back on, revealing a stranger standing at the top of the glass staircase holding a suppressed firearm.
