Chapter 10 - The Final Breach

The heavy oak doors of the master study were scarred with fresh splinter marks where Julian had frantically tried to reinforce the jamb from the inside. Inside the room, the soft, rhythmic hum of liquid-cooled servers filled the air, accompanied by the frantic clicking of mechanical keys as Julian hammered commands into the master control terminal, racing against the approaching tactical team.
“Open up, Julian! The house is completely surrounded!” Detective Miller’s voice boomed through the hallway intercom, followed by the heavy thud of a tactical ram hitting the outer frame.
Julian didn’t answer. Sweat dripped from his forehead onto the polished mahogany desk as a progress bar on his monitor ticked slowly toward completion: DATA TRANSFER: 94% COMPLETE.
“Just two more minutes,” Julian muttered to himself, his fingers flying across the keyboard like a pianist possessed. “Just verify the offshore hash and the company is mine.”
With a deafening crash, the reinforced oak doors splintered inward. The heavy wood slammed against the interior bookshelves as Elena led the tactical assault team into the room, her sidearm raised and locked on Julian’s chest.
“Don’t move an inch, Julian! Hands on your head, fingers interlaced!” Elena commanded, her voice cutting through the noise of the server fans with absolute authority.
Julian froze, his hands hovering inches above the keyboard. For a second, his eyes darted toward the heavy brass letter opener resting beside his mousepad, calculating the distance and the odds. Then he looked at Elena, taking in the bruised face and the tactical stance of the woman he had dismissed as a simple domestic employee just an hour ago.
“You’re remarkably persistent for a babysitter,” Julian sneer-smiled, slowly raising his hands above his head while his foot subtly pressed a hidden floor pedal beneath the mahogany desk.
“Don’t do it, Julian,” Elena warned, stepping closer, her finger tightening slightly on the trigger guard. “I know about the kill-switch script you mapped to the floor pedal. One more push and you fry the entire motherboard, destroying the evidence along with your own offshore accounts.”
Julian’s smile vanished. He slowly pulled his foot back from the pedal, leaning back in his leather executive chair with a defeated sigh as two tactical officers rushed forward, slammed him against the desk, and slapped heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
“You might have the servers, Agent Vance,” Julian muttered as they hauled him toward the broken doorway, his voice dripping with venom. “But check the secondary corporate registry. You’ll find out that Hawthorne Technologies wasn’t the only thing tied to my name.”
Elena ignored him, walking over to the master terminal where the progress bar had frozen at 99%. She plugged her cryptographic recovery key into the console, hitting the override sequence just as the screen flashed a brilliant, blinding green.

She let out a long, slow breath, finally lowering her weapon as the heavy scent of ozone and defeat filled the smoke-filled study.
