Chapter 9 - The East Wall Escape

The deafening crack of a gunshot reverberated through the concrete basement, shaking dust from the ceiling rafters. Elena dragged Sarah up the stairs, their boots pounding frantically against the wooden steps. Behind them, shouts and scuffling noises echoed in the enclosed space, followed by the sound of heavy furniture crashing to the floor.

They burst through the broken doorway into the main hallway of Linden House. The grand chandelier cast a warm, mocking light over the expensive art pieces lining the walls. Elena’s lungs burned, and sharp, agonizing cramps gripped her lower abdomen, but adrenaline fueled every frantic step she took.

"Mrs. Elena, I can't run anymore!" Sarah sobbed, stumbling over her own feet as they reached the grand foyer.

"We have to! If they catch us, we're dead!" Elena yelled, pulling Sarah toward the massive mahogany front doors.

Before they could reach the brass handles, the front doors swung open on their own. Clara stood on the porch, flanked by two burly private security guards wearing tactical vests and holding heavy flashlights. Clara’s face was twisted in pure fury, her pearl necklace bouncing violently against her chest.

"Going somewhere so soon?" Clara mocked, stepping directly into their path.

Elena stopped dead, her heart plummeting into her stomach. She looked frantically around the foyer for another exit, but the security guards quickly fanned out, blocking both the hallway and the grand staircase.

"You're monsters," Elena panted, shielding her swollen stomach with her hands. "Julian knew what you were. That's why he hid the truth!"

"Julian was a pathetic weakling who cared more about a gold-digging stranger than his own blood," Clara snarled, taking a slow, menacing step forward. "And you are nothing more than a temporary inconvenience. Guards, take them back to the basement. Secure them properly this time—no more mistakes."

The two security guards marched forward, their heavy boots heavy on the marble floor. They reached out, grabbing Sarah by both arms as the maid shrieked in terror. The second guard lunged toward Elena, his massive hands reaching out to grab her hair.

Instinct took over. Elena sidestepped sharply, using the momentum of the guard's own lunge against him. She grabbed a heavy, porcelain decorative vase off the entryway table and smashed it directly over the guard's shoulder. The porcelain shattered into a thousand pieces, sending the guard stumbling backward in surprise.

"Run, Sarah!" Elena screamed, breaking past the stunned guards and darting toward the winding corridor that led to the old greenhouse and the east perimeter wall.

They tore down the dark hallway, the shouts of the guards fading slightly behind them as they reached the heavy glass doors of the greenhouse. Elena threw her body against the glass, pushing it open, and tumbled out into the cool night air.

As they scrambled over the low brick foundation of the greenhouse toward the iron perimeter fence, a blinding spotlight suddenly flooded the yard, pinning them in place. A booming voice echoed from the roof above.
