Chapter 6 - Trapped in the Quarters

The damp air of the chauffeur’s basement quarters smelled of motor oil and old dust. A single bare incandescent bulb swung gently from a frayed cord on the ceiling, casting flickering shadows across the concrete floor. Elena and Sarah sat bound to wooden chairs, their wrists secured tightly with thick plastic zip ties.

Marcus stood under the swinging light, casually flipping through the pages of the leather-bound portfolio. His face remained an impassive mask, but a muscle in his jaw ticked rhythmically. Clara paced back and forth behind him, her beige dress rustling with every furious stride.

"Stupidity," Clara muttered, stopping to glare at Sarah. "Absolute, unadulterated stupidity from the help. I always said we should have replaced you months ago."

Sarah kept her head bowed, tears silently streaming down her face. "I'm sorry, Mrs. Clara. Please don't hurt me."

Marcus closed the portfolio with a sharp thud that echoed in the small room. He looked up, locking his cold gaze onto Elena. The sheer malice in his eyes sent a shiver straight down her spine.

"You went to great lengths to orchestrate this little theft, Elena," Marcus said, his voice deceptively soft. "Using a naive housemaid as your proxy. Did you really think you could outsmart us in our own home?"

"I didn't orchestrate anything," Elena spat back, straining against the zip ties biting into her wrists. "Sarah acted on her own because she knew the truth about you monsters! Julian despised you both, and that is why he left everything to me and our child."

Clara laughed harshly, walking over and grabbing Elena roughly by the chin, forcing her head upward. "Julian was a weak, dying fool. And you are nothing more than a transient who trapped him with a fabricated pregnancy. But don't worry. Once we destroy these papers properly, this whole problem will vanish."

Marcus walked over to a metal oil drum sitting in the corner of the basement. He tossed the leather portfolio inside, pulled a box of wooden matches from his suit pocket, and struck one against the rough side of the box.

"No! Stop!" Elena screamed, thrashing against her chair with all her might. "Those are legal documents! You'll go to prison!"

"Who is going to send us to prison?" Marcus asked coldly, holding the burning match inches away from the fluttering pages inside the barrel. "The police in this town answer to the Linden name. Say goodbye to your future, Elena."

As the flame touched the edge of the first parchment, the heavy metal door at the top of the basement stairs was kicked off its hinges with a deafening crash, and a deep voice echoed from the darkness.
