Chapter 12 - The Breaking Point

The sharp steel blades of the garden shears glinted under the harsh security lights as Clara charged across the grass with terrifying speed. Her pearl necklace snapped, the heavy white beads scattering across the stone pathway like drops of falling rain.

"Elena, look out!" Sarah screamed, scrambling backward out of the way.

Elena reacted on pure survival instinct. She twisted sharply to the side, letting Clara’s momentum carry her past. Clara tripped over a low stone border, her beige dress tearing as she slammed hard onto the gravel pathway. The garden shears flew from her hands, clattering loudly against the stainless-steel trash bin near the greenhouse wall.

Federal agents swarmed the area instantly. Two officers pinned Clara to the ground as she shrieked and thrashed like a wild animal, her hair coming undone from its neat blonde bun.

"Get your hands off me! You filthy animals! I own this town!" Clara screamed, her voice cracking with hysterical rage as handcuffs clicked tightly around her wrists.

Marcus stood frozen near the patio steps, his hands raised slightly. He didn't run. He didn't fight. He simply watched his mother being dragged away in handcuffs, his dark eyes entirely devoid of emotion. As federal agents approached him and snapped cuffs onto his wrists as well, he looked straight at Elena.

"You think this is a victory, Elena?" Marcus whispered coldly as they hauled him past her. "The Linden debts are larger than you know. This house is a sinking ship, and you're going down with it."

Elena didn't flinch. She stood tall, her hand resting gently on her swollen stomach as she watched the man who had terrorized her being led away in disgrace.

"At least I'll go down with my integrity intact," Elena replied steadily.

Thomas stepped through the open gate, lowering his rifle and handing it to an agent. He walked over to Elena, offering a supportive arm to help her steady herself.

"Are you alright, Elena? Do we need to get you to a hospital immediately?" Thomas asked, his expression filled with genuine concern.

"I'm okay, Thomas. Just... exhausted," Elena breathed, a wave of immense fatigue washing over her now that the adrenaline was finally fading from her system. "Thank God you got here in time."

"Julian was my dearest friend. I promised him I would protect his family no matter what," Thomas said gently. He guided her toward a waiting federal vehicle parked just outside the gates. "Let's get you out of this cursed house. A medical team is waiting down the road."

As Elena took her first step away from Linden House, feeling the cool night breeze on her face for the first time in days, she looked back at the sprawling estate. The grand mansion looked dark, cold, and hollow under the moonlight.

Just as she slid into the back seat of the secure vehicle, a sharp, metallic scraping sound came from inside the trunk of Marcus’s abandoned car parked nearby, followed by a faint, muffled cry for help.
