Chapter 15 - Ashes of Linden House

The thick, acrid smell of smoke filled the night air as hungry orange flames began licking greedily out of the third-story turret windows of Linden House. The ancient timber frame of the mansion caught fire with terrifying speed, illuminating the sprawling estate in a hellish, flickering glow.

"Get the fire department here now!" Thomas shouted into his radio, sprinting toward the front entrance of the burning mansion.

"Wait, Thomas! You can't go in there, it's a suicide mission!" Elena yelled, following closely behind him despite her exhausted body and throbbing cramps.

"If Arthur burns with those documents, you lose everything, Elena! The trust, the estate, your child’s future—it all vanishes into ashes!" Thomas shouted back over the roar of the growing fire.

Vance limped forward, grabbing a heavy fire extinguisher from the exterior security box. "I've got your back! Let's move!"

They threw open the heavy mahogany front doors, stepping into a foyer now thick with grey, choking smoke. Visibility was reduced to mere inches. The heat was immense, radiating off the oak paneling like an open furnace. Overhead, wooden beams groaned and cracked under the strain of the raging inferno above.

"Arthur!" Elena coughed, covering her mouth with her stained blue dress as she navigated the blinding haze. "Arthur, where are you?!"

From the top of the grand staircase, a coughing, broken voice answered through the smoke. "Burn it all... burn the lies away!"

Thomas bolted up the stairs, ignoring the burning embers raining down around him. Elena followed as fast as her heavy legs could carry her, her heart pounding in her ears. At the landing of the east wing, they found Arthur trapped behind a collapsed wooden bookshelf engulfed in roaring flames.

The crazed man was clutching a charred, leather-bound portfolio tightly against his chest, refusing to let go even as the heat scorched his skin.

"Give me your hand, Arthur!" Thomas yelled, lunging forward through the wall of smoke and grabbing Arthur’s arm with brute strength.

With a mighty heave, Thomas dragged Arthur backward just as the ceiling above the landing collapsed with a thunderous crash, sending tons of burning timber cascading down onto the stairs below.

"I have them... I saved them for Julian," Arthur wheezed, handing the scorched, soot-covered portfolio directly to Elena before collapsing unconscious onto the smoky floor.

"We need to get out of here now!" Vance yelled, grabbing Arthur’s legs while Thomas hoisted his upper body.

Elena clutched the precious portfolio tightly against her chest. Together, they stumbled and fought their way back through the smoke-filled corridors, bursting through the front doors just as the entire grand staircase of Linden House collapsed inward in a blinding explosion of sparks and fire.

They collapsed onto the cool, dew-soaked grass of the lawn, gasping desperately for fresh air as sirens wailed loudly in the distance, finally echoing up the winding driveway.

Elena lay on her back, staring up at the night sky as the mansion that had been her prison burned to the ground. She opened the scorched leather portfolio with trembling fingers. Inside, perfectly preserved beneath layers of heavy fireproof lining, lay the original documents proving her rightful ownership of Linden House and securing a safe, untainted future for her unborn child.

As the first rays of the morning sun broke over the horizon, casting a warm, golden light across the smoking ruins, Elena placed a gentle, loving hand over her stomach, knowing the nightmare was finally, truly over.
