Chapter 7 - The Uninvited Guest

The heavy steel basement door slammed against the concrete wall with a tremendous crash, sending a cloud of dust billowing into the air. Marcus froze, the burning match hovering just centimeters above the oil drum. Clara shrieked, stumbling backward into the shadows as all eyes snapped toward the dark stairwell.

A tall figure stepped out of the shadows, silhouette framed by the harsh hallway light. Broad-shouldered and wearing a rugged leather jacket, the man walked down the steps with slow, deliberate authority. His boots crunched loudly on the concrete floor.

Marcus slowly dropped the match into the drum, though he didn't let go of the portfolio just yet. He turned around, his expression hardening as he sized up the intruder.

"Who the hell are you?" Marcus demanded, his voice laced with venom. "How did you get past the gates?"

The man stopped under the swinging light, revealing rugged features, sharp blue eyes, and a small scar running along his jawline. He looked at Elena tied to the chair, then shifted his gaze to the burning barrel before locking eyes with Marcus.

"Name's Detective Vance," the man said smoothly, flashing a silver badge that caught the harsh light. "State Police. We received an anonymous tip about an unlawful abduction and asset tampering on this property."

Elena’s heart soared. Help had finally arrived.

Clara’s face drained of all color. She stepped forward, her hands trembling as she adjusted her pearl necklace. "There has been some terrible misunderstanding, Officer. This young woman is a disturbed family member experiencing a mental episode. We were merely securing her personal effects."

Detective Vance didn't blink. He took another step forward, his hand resting casually near the service weapon holstered at his hip. "Does securing personal effects involve zip-tying a pregnant woman to a chair and burning documents in an oil drum, ma'am?"

Marcus stepped in front of the drum, blocking Vance's view of the portfolio. His towering height gave him an intimidating presence, but Vance didn't flinch.

"These documents are private corporate property," Marcus said, his voice entirely steady. "This individual broke into our private study and attempted to steal sensitive family assets. We are within our legal rights to detain her until local authorities arrive."

"Local authorities are currently parked outside, and they take kidnapping very seriously," Vance replied, his voice hardening. "Untie them. Now."

Marcus stared at Vance for a long, agonizing moment. The tension in the basement was so thick it could be cut with a knife. Slowly, Marcus reached into the drum, pulled out the scorched leather portfolio, and tossed it onto a nearby workbench.

"David, untie them," Marcus ordered through gritted teeth.

As David nervously moved forward with a pocket knife to cut Elena’s bindings, Detective Vance kept his hand resting firmly on his holster. But as Elena rubbed her raw wrists and stood up, Vance’s phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, glanced at the screen, and his expression instantly turned pale.

"Vance," he answered, listening for a few seconds. The color completely drained from his face. "What do you mean, they're not coming?"
