Chapter 14 - The Attic Phantom

The flickering security lights cast an eerie, blood-orange glow over the emaciated figure standing on the second-story balcony. Arthur Linden, gaunt and wild-eyed, raised the glowing red-hot fireplace poker high above his head, letting out another harrowing, unhinged laugh that echoed across the estate grounds.
"Ten years! Ten long years in the dark!" Arthur bellowed, his voice hoarse and raw from disuse. He pointed the glowing iron directly down at Elena in the back of the vehicle. "You think you won, Clara? You think you can inherit my house?!"
"He doesn't know Clara is gone," Vance muttered, struggling to his feet with Thomas’s help. "The drugs fried his brain. He thinks everyone in the courtyard is still his tormentor."
Elena's heart hammered frantically against her ribs. She pressed her back against the car seat, her hands trembling as she looked up at the crazed man towering above them. The nightmare of Linden House wasn't over. The monsters they had just arrested were only part of a much older, deeper cycle of generational madness and captivity.
"Arthur, listen to me!" Elena shouted out the open car window, forcing her voice to remain steady despite the terror gripping her soul. "Clara and Marcus are gone! They won't hurt you anymore! I am Julian’s wife. I'm here to help you!"
Arthur stopped his frenzied pacing. He lowered the fireplace poker slightly, squinting down through the darkness at Elena's pregnant silhouette. A twisted, confusing frown crossed his scarred face.
"Julian... my little brother Julian?" Arthur muttered, his voice dropping to a trembling whisper. "No. Julian is dead. They poisoned his tea. Just like they poisoned mine."
"He's losing his grip on reality completely," Thomas warned quietly, resting his hand on his holster. "If he steps off that ledge, or tries to come down here with that poker, we'll have to take him down. I don't want any more bloodshed tonight."
Suddenly, Arthur spun around toward the open double doors leading back into the darkened attic hallway. He threw his head back and laughed maniacally.
"You can't lock me away again! I unlocked the vault! I took the real papers! They're burning right now!" Arthur screamed before vanishing back into the shadows of the mansion.
Elena’s eyes widened in sudden horror. "Wait! What did he just say?" she yelled, opening the car door and stepping back out onto the gravel path, ignoring Thomas’s protests.
"Elena, stay back, it's not safe!" Thomas ordered.
"Did you hear him?" Elena demanded, turning to face Thomas and Vance. "He said he unlocked the vault! He took the papers! They aren't in Zurich, and they aren't in the safe—he has them!"
Vance wiped the motor oil from his forehead, his expression grim. "If that unstable man has the original estate deeds and the true unedited will, and he's trapped inside a burning, dilapidated mansion with no way out..."
Before Vance could finish his sentence, a thick plume of black smoke began billowing rapidly from the third-story turret window of Linden House, accompanied by the distinct, sickening smell of burning timber and melting plastic.
