Chapter 1 - The Iron Grip

The fluorescent lights of the modern kitchen hummed softly, casting a sterile white glow over the polished granite countertops. Clara, an elderly woman with sharp features, short blonde hair, and an expensive pearl necklace resting neatly against her beige dress, tightened her grip. Her fingers pressed into the delicate skin of the young woman’s throat. Clara’s breath smelled faintly of peppermint and bitter cold.

"Learn some respect," Clara snarled, her voice a low, venomous hiss that cut through the silence of the room.

Elena, the young pregnant woman with long brown hair and a stained blue dress, gasped for air. Her hands flew up, frantically clawing at Clara’s wrist, but the older woman possessed a terrifying, wiry strength. Tears welled in Elena’s eyes, mixing with sheer disbelief as she looked toward the doorway.

Beside Clara stood Marcus, a tall man impeccably dressed in a dark suit. His expression remained entirely neutral, his broad shoulders blocking the only viable exit. He did not pull Clara away. Instead, he simply watched, his dark eyes devoid of any warmth or pity.

"You cannot keep me here forever," Elena choked out, her voice raspy and strained as her lungs burned for oxygen. "The baby... you're hurting the baby."

Clara laughed, a cold, dry sound that lacked any genuine humor. She shoved Elena backward, sending the pregnant woman stumbling against the stainless-steel trash bin near the island. The metal clattered loudly against the floor, echoing through the sprawling estate.

"That child is not yours to ruin, just as this house was never yours to claim," Clara snapped, adjusting the cuffs of her beige dress with chilling composure. "You thought you could slip into this family uninvited and take everything my son built?"

Elena clutched her swollen stomach, panting heavily as she slid down the counter until she hit the cold tile floor. She looked up at Marcus, desperation bleeding into her tone.

"Marcus, tell her the truth," Elena pleaded, her voice trembling. "Tell her about the legal documents in the safe. Tell her what you promised me in Boston."

Marcus stepped forward, casting a long shadow over Elena. He reached into his suit jacket, not to offer help, but to pull out a heavy, brass-keyed diary that Elena instantly recognized.

"Boston was a mistake, Elena," Marcus said coldly. "And now, open the safe."
