Chapter 2 - The Brass Key

The heavy brass key felt cold against the polished granite countertop. Marcus dropped it with a sharp metallic clink that pierced the tense silence of the kitchen. Elena stared at the key, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps as she clutched her rounded belly. The stainless-steel trash bin remained slightly dented from her earlier fall, a silent witness to the brutality hiding beneath the pristine veneer of Linden House.
"I won't open it," Elena whispered, her voice trembling but defiant. "You have no legal right to that safe, Marcus. My husband left those papers to me and my unborn child."
Clara stepped forward, her pearls catching the harsh fluorescent light. A cruel smile stretched across her thin lips. She looked down at Elena with pure disdain, her beige dress perfectly pressed despite the violent struggle moments ago.
"Your husband, my dear, was manipulated by a cunning gold-digger," Clara spat out, her voice dripping with venom. "Julian was weak in his final months, blinded by youthful vanity. But Linden House belongs to this family, and we will not let an outsider strip us of our legacy."
Marcus remained silent, his imposing frame blocking the doorway. His dark suit seemed to absorb the light, making him look like an executioner waiting for a final command. He nudged the heavy brass key closer to Elena with the polished tip of his expensive leather shoe.
"Open the safe, Elena," Marcus repeated, his tone dangerously flat. "Or things will become far more difficult for you before the night is over. You know we control every exit, and nobody in this town will believe a word you say against us."
Tears spilled over Elena's eyelashes, hot and fast. She knew they were right. The nearest neighbor was miles away, concealed behind massive iron gates and thick ironwood trees. Her phone had vanished hours ago, confiscated during dinner. She slowly pushed herself up from the cold tile floor, her legs shaking from exhaustion and fear.
She reached out with trembling fingers and picked up the heavy brass key. It bore the intricate crest of the Linden family, a mocking symbol of their inherited power. Marcus watched her every move like a hawk watching a trapped rabbit.
"Smart girl," Marcus murmured softly. "Now, lead the way to the study."

Elena turned toward the dark hallway, hiding the small, metallic glint of a silver letter opener she had quietly slipped from the counter into her sleeve. As she pushed open the heavy oak door of the private study, the grandfather clock chimed midnight. But as she stepped inside, the hairs on the back of her neck stood up. The safe was already wide open, its heavy steel door swinging gently on its hinges, and the documents were gone.
