Chapter 3 - The Empty Vault

The heavy oak door of the private study creaked open, revealing a room shrouded in deep shadows. Moonlight poured through the tall, arched windows, illuminating dust motes dancing in the cold air. Elena stepped across the threshold, the brass key still clutched tightly in her sweaty palm. But the moment she laid eyes on the wall safe, her heart skipped a beat.

The steel door was wide open. The inner compartment was completely empty.

Elena stopped dead in her tracks, her breath catching in her throat. She spun around to face Marcus and Clara, who followed closely behind her. The cold, triumphant look on Clara’s face instantly vanished, replaced by a flash of genuine confusion and rising panic. Marcus strode past Elena, his broad shoulders brushing against her as he peered into the dark, hollow interior of the safe.

"What is the meaning of this?" Marcus demanded, his voice dropping an octave as he turned his piercing gaze toward his mother. "Clara, you said the documents were secured here."

Clara pushed past Marcus, her eyes widening in disbelief as she stared at the empty metal shelves. She reached out, her manicured fingers scratching against the bare steel as if searching for a hidden compartment that no longer existed. Her pearl necklace rattled against her beige dress as her chest heaved with sudden agitation.

"They were here!" Clara hissed, her composure cracking for the first time. "I checked the vault myself this morning before breakfast. Nobody outside of this household has the combination or the master key."

Elena stared at them, a sudden wave of desperate hope mixing with overwhelming confusion. If Clara and Marcus did not take the documents, and Julian had entrusted them to her in Boston, who else could possibly know about the hidden trust?

"You're lying," Elena accused, pointing the heavy brass key at Marcus. "This is a setup. You took them out earlier to trap me, to make it look like I stole them or lost them!"

"Shut your mouth, girl!" Clara shrieked, lunging forward with unexpected fury.

Marcus caught his mother by the arm, holding her back with minimal effort. His dark eyes narrowed as he looked at Elena, analyzing every micro-expression on her pale face. He could see she was just as shocked as they were. Someone else had breached Linden House. Someone had slipped past their iron security gates, bypassed the alarm system, and stolen the only legal proof that gave Elena any claim to the estate.

"Someone else is in the house," Marcus said slowly, the realization dawning like a dark cloud over the room.

Before anyone could speak another word, a heavy crash echoed from the floor directly above them, followed by the distinct sound of shattering glass.
