Chapter 8 - The Severed Line

The silence in the basement grew heavy and suffocating. Detective Vance lowered his phone slowly, his sharp blue eyes darting away from Marcus and locking onto Elena with a look of profound apology.
"What is it?" Elena demanded, her voice cracking as she stepped away from the wooden chair. "Tell me you called for backup."
Marcus let out a low, cold chuckle, stepping away from the oil drum. He brushed imaginary dust off the sleeves of his dark suit, a smug smile returning to his face.
"Did you really think we didn't own the county lines, Detective?" Marcus asked smoothly. "Small towns run on loyalty, and loyalty is bought and paid for long before state troopers ever decide to take a midnight drive."
Vance clenched his jaw, sliding his phone back into his jacket pocket. "My precinct dispatch just called back. They received an emergency alert canceling my jurisdiction over this estate. They claim it's a private civil dispute handled by local municipal judges."
"Which happen to sit on the Linden Trust board," Clara added, her voice dripping with venomous triumph as she stepped out of the shadows. She smoothed down her beige dress. "You stepped into a game you don't understand, Officer. And now, you are trespassing."
Panic clawed at Elena’s chest. She looked at Sarah, who was still weeping softly on her chair, too terrified to move. They were cut off from the outside world again, trapped inside a gilded cage owned by monsters who operated above the law.
"You can't just let them do this!" Elena pleaded, taking a step toward Vance. "They're going to kill us! They killed Julian, and they'll kill my baby too!"
Detective Vance held up a hand to calm her down, but his own eyes betrayed his mounting frustration. He was a good cop trapped in a corrupt system, outmatched by wealth and institutional power.
"Listen to me, Elena," Vance murmured quietly, stepping close enough so only she could hear. "I can't fight their whole security detail alone. When I give you the signal, run for the east wall. Don't look back."
Marcus noticed the whispered exchange immediately. His eyes narrowed dangerously.
"David, grab the tire iron," Marcus ordered without breaking eye contact with Vance. "Escort our uninvited guest and his little friend off the property. Permanently."
David grinned, gripping the heavy metal tool tightly as he stepped toward Vance. But before David could swing, Vance spun around, unleashing a swift, calculated roundhouse kick that struck David squarely in the chest, sending the chauffeur crashing backward into the shelves of motor oil cans.
"Run, Elena!" Vance shouted, drawing his service weapon and aiming it straight at Marcus.

Elena didn't hesitate. She grabbed Sarah by the arm, hauling the terrified maid up from the chair, and bolted for the open basement stairs as the sound of a gunshot echoed behind them.
