Chapter 9 - Sparks in the Dark

The harsh, metallic shriek of a diamond-tipped saw biting into reinforced concrete tore through the absolute darkness of the underground vault. Sparks rained down from the ceiling in a brilliant cascade of orange and white fire, illuminating the terror etched across Elena’s face.

“He’s cutting through the foundation wall,” Sarah yelled over the deafening noise of the machinery, grabbing Elena’s hand to pull her away from the falling debris. “He’s coming for the evidence!”

Maya stayed close, her small fingers gripping the edge of Elena’s black shirt as the heat from the friction of the saw warmed the chilly air of the basement. The concrete wall shuddered violently, a thick spiderweb of cracks spreading rapidly across the stone blocks above the iron safe.

Elena pushed herself up, adrenaline surging through her veins as she shoved Maya behind a heavy metal shelving unit for protection. She sprinted toward the semi-open safe, ignoring the flying concrete dust that stung her eyes and coated her clothes in a layer of grey powder.

“Sarah, help me with this door!” Elena shouted, throwing her weight against the heavy iron wheel of the safe.

Sarah joined her instantly, placing her hands alongside Elena’s. Together, they heaved with every ounce of strength they possessed. The heavy mechanism groaned, gears grinding against years of disuse, before the thick steel door swung wide open with a resounding thud.

Elena thrust her hand inside the dark cavity of the safe, her fingers brushing against smooth leather and stiff parchment. She grabbed a thick envelope stamped with a red wax seal and pulled it free just as a jagged chunk of concrete crashed onto the floor where she had been standing seconds before.

Through the widening hole in the wall, the beam of a high-powered flashlight cut through the dust. Marcus’s tall silhouette appeared in the opening, his brown suit jacket discarded, his shirtsleeves rolled up to his elbows. He held a heavy industrial sledgehammer in his right hand, his face slick with sweat and twisted into a mask of cold desperation.

“Hand me the envelope, Elena,” Marcus demanded, his voice echoing menacingly off the stone walls. “You don't want to know what happens if you try to leave this house with it.”

Elena clutched the envelope to her chest, backing away until her spine hit the cold metal shelving unit.

“You killed them, Marcus,” Elena said, her voice steady and ringing with absolute fury. “You killed our parents, and you tried to do the same to Sarah.”

Marcus stepped through the ragged hole in the wall, the sledgehammer dragging heavily against the floor behind him.

“They were standing in the way of our future,” Marcus said coldly. “And now, unfortunately, you are too.”

Before Marcus could raise the hammer, a figure stepped out from the shadows directly behind him, holding a heavy iron fireplace poker high in the air.
