Chapter 12 - The Open Front Door

Elena stared in absolute horror at the glowing laptop screen inside the wall safe. The camera angle showed the empty living room, the Persian rug, and the large crystal chandelier gently swaying above. The heavy oak front door, which Detective Vance had secured just moments before, was slowly swinging inward on its hinges, revealing a figure standing on the porch in the gathering dusk.
Before Elena could scream a warning, a sharp, muffled gunshot echoed from the front foyer, followed immediately by the sound of heavy footsteps running toward the master bedroom.
“Sarah, grab Maya!” Elena shouted, slamming the safe door shut and turning around just as the bedroom door flew off its hinges with a splintering crash.
Detective Vance stumbled backward into the bedroom, clutching his shoulder as a dark crimson stain rapidly spread across his grey trench coat. He collapsed against the edge of the mahogany armoire, his service weapon sliding across the floorboards toward Elena’s feet.
“Ambush,” Vance gasped, his face draining of color as he pressed his hand against the wound. “There’s... there’s someone else in the house. Marcus didn't act alone.”
Sarah pulled Maya tightly behind her, positioning herself between the terrified young girl and the open doorway. The hallway outside remained pitch black, save for the flickering light of a single candle bobbing rhythmically in the dark.
A tall figure stepped slowly into the threshold of the master bedroom, dressed in a dark brown suit identical to the one Marcus had been wearing, but the face was obscured by a heavy black ski mask. In their right hand, they held a silenced pistol, the barrel still smoking faintly in the cool air.
“End of the line, Elena,” a distorted, synthetic voice hissed from behind the mask. “You shouldn't have gone digging in the basement.”
Elena didn't hesitate. She dropped to her knees, her fingers wrapping firmly around the grip of the service weapon Detective Vance had dropped. She raised the heavy metal pistol, pointing it directly at the masked intruder with a steady, unyielding hand—the very hand that had once held Maya’s when she took her first steps.
The intruder paused, lowering the barrel of their silenced pistol slightly as they chuckled behind the mask.

“Go ahead and pull the trigger, Elena,” the distorted voice mocked softly. “Let’s see if you have the stomach to kill your own husband’s twin brother.”
