Chapter 5 - The Empty Grave

Marcus stumbled forward, his momentum carrying him past the shimmering figure and into the empty guest room. He slammed into the bare wall, turning around with a wild look in his eyes. The room was completely empty. There was no bed, no suitcase, no closet full of clothes—only bare white walls and dust motes dancing in the failing afternoon sunlight.

Elena stood frozen in the hallway, her hand still outstretched where she had touched the warm fabric just seconds before. The scent of lavender lingered heavily in the corridor, thick and cloying.

“She’s gone,” Elena whispered, her voice hollow as she stared at the empty room where her sister had just stood. She turned her wild eyes toward Marcus. “What did you do, Marcus? Tell me what you did three months ago.”

Marcus stood in the center of the bare room, breathing heavily, his tie slightly askew. He avoided Elena’s gaze, running a large hand over his closely cropped hair.

“I didn't do anything,” Marcus lied, his voice pitching slightly upward—a telltale sign Elena had learned to recognize over ten years of marriage. “You know how the accident was, El. The car was burned beyond recognition. The police said the dental records matched. We did what we had to do to get closure.”

Maya walked slowly into the guest room, her small shoes tapping against the bare floorboards. She walked directly to the far corner where a single, small wooden box sat half-hidden beneath the floor grating.

“Daddy is lying, Mommy,” Maya said matter-of-factly, bending down to touch the wooden box.

Elena rushed over, dropping to her knees beside her daughter. She pushed Maya gently aside and lifted the wooden lid of the box. Inside rested a thick stack of old legal documents, a heavy gold signet ring belonging to Marcus’s grandfather, and a blood-stained handkerchief bearing the initials S.K.

Beneath the documents lay a folded newspaper clipping dated three months prior. The headline stared up at them with stark, brutal clarity: POLICE INVESTIGATE SUSPICIOUS MISSING PERSONS REPORT AT OAKRIDGE CEMETERY.

Elena looked up slowly, her eyes burning with a sudden, terrifying realization.

“You didn't bury Sarah at Oakridge,” Elena said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “Who is actually in that grave, Marcus?”

Marcus stepped backward out of the room, his hand sliding into his suit pocket as a cold, calculating look settled over his features.

“You shouldn't have looked in that box, El,” Marcus said softly, locking the guest room door from the outside with a sharp click.
