Chapter 8 - The Sound of the Lock

The heavy thud of the padlock sliding home vibrated through the stone foundation of the underground vault, sealing the damp air inside like a tomb. Elena spun around, dropping the candle as she rushed back to the base of the stairs, throwing her weight against the heavy wooden door.

“Marcus! Open this door!” Elena screamed, her voice cracking in the confined space.

There was no answer from above, only the muffled, rhythmic sound of heavy footsteps walking across the living room floorboards, followed shortly by the sound of the front door opening and closing.

Sarah stepped out of the shadows, picking up the fallen candle from the stone floor and brushing a speck of soot from its base. Her face remained remarkably calm, as if being locked in a subterranean prison was merely an inconvenience rather than a life-threatening crisis.

“He’s gone to the bank,” Sarah said quietly, holding the candle up to illuminate the damp stone walls. “He thinks he has won, just like he did when he locked me down here three years ago.”

Maya didn't cry. She walked over to one of the metal shelving units, pulling a small notebook from a lower shelf and flipping through its pages with intense curiosity.

“Look, Mommy, Daddy wrote all the money codes in this book,” Maya said, holding up a black leather ledger.

Elena sank down onto the bottom step of the staircase, burying her face in her hands as the full magnitude of her situation crashed down upon her. She had trusted a monster. She had shared a bed with a man who systematically erased her family members one by one, stealing their inheritances and burying their lives behind brick and mortar.

“Why didn't you tell me sooner, Sarah?” Elena whispered through her fingers, her voice choked with grief and self-loathing. “Why did you let him convince me you were dead?”

Sarah sat down on the step beside her, wrapping a warm, solid arm around Elena’s shoulders. The illusion of her being a ghost vanished entirely; her touch was flesh and blood, steady and comforting.

“Because he threatened you and Maya,” Sarah explained softly. “He told me if I ever tried to contact you, he would make sure Maya grew up without either of us. I had to wait until he felt safe enough to let his guard down. I had to wait until he made a mistake.”

Elena looked up, wiping a stray tear from her cheek. “What mistake?”

Sarah smiled faintly, pointing toward the far corner of the vault where a heavy iron safe was built directly into the foundation wall. The door of the safe was standing slightly ajar, a thick envelope sticking out of the crack.

“He forgot to lock the safe before he ran upstairs,” Sarah said. “Inside is the deed to the entire estate, signed over in blood—and the confession letter detailing how he murdered our parents to get it.”

Suddenly, the dim overhead emergency light in the vault flickered and died completely, plunging them into absolute, pitch-black darkness, followed immediately by the sound of a heavy mechanical saw cutting into the outer wall.
