Chapter 6 - Trapped by the Chandelier

The heavy click of the deadbolt sliding into place echoed like a gunshot through the silent hallway. Elena lunged forward, throwing her weight against the wooden door, but it didn't budge. The solid oak frame held firm against her desperate shoves.
“Marcus! Open this door right now!” Elena screamed, pounding her fists against the wood until her knuckles flared with pain.
Beside her, Maya stood calmly, holding the blood-stained handkerchief she had pulled from the wooden box. The young girl didn't cry or scream; her eyes simply reflected the dim glow of the hallway sconce.
“Daddy locked us in just like he locked Auntie Sarah in the basement last year,” Maya said softly, her voice carrying an eerie, childlike detachment.
Elena froze, her hands dropping slowly from the door. She spun around to face her daughter, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
“What did you say, Maya? What did you just say about the basement?”
Maya looked up, her braided hair shifting as she nodded toward the floorboards beneath their feet.
“Before Auntie Sarah went away, she lived down there for a long time. Daddy brought her food every night in a paper bag. I used to watch from the top of the stairs when you were sleeping.”
Elena felt the room spin violently around her. The perfect life she had built—the beautiful home, the loving husband, the successful corporate career—shattered into a million jagged pieces in a matter of seconds. All the late nights Marcus claimed were spent at the office, all the strange financial transactions she had ignored, all the whispered phone calls in the dark—it all suddenly coalesced into a horrifying tapestry of deceit.
“He lied to me,” Elena whispered, sliding slowly down the wall until she sat on the hardwood floor, pulling her knees to her chest. “He lied to both of us.”
Above them, the large crystal chandelier began to vibrate. A low, metallic hum filled the air, growing louder by the second as the heavy glass pendants rattled against their brass mountings. The warm light flickered once, twice, and then plunged the hallway into deep, absolute darkness.
Through the darkness, the faint sound of footsteps began to ascend from the basement stairs located just behind the guest room wall. Thump. Thump. Thump.
Elena reached out blindly in the dark, her fingers finding Maya’s small, warm hand and pulling the girl close against her chest.
“Mommy, she’s coming up,” Maya whispered against Elena’s shoulder, her breath hot and steady in the pitch black.
A key turned smoothly in the locked door in front of them. The heavy oak door swung open on silent hinges, bathing the hallway in a pale, ethereal blue light. Standing in the doorway was Sarah, holding a flickering candle, her eyes fixed entirely on Elena.

“You left the back door unlocked, sister,” Sarah said quietly, stepping aside to reveal a steep, dark staircase leading down into the bowels of the earth.
