Chapter 13 - The Twin’s Secret

The name echoed through the quiet bedroom like a physical blow. Elena’s finger hovered over the trigger of the service weapon, her breath catching in her throat as the weight of the realization settled over her.
“A twin?” Elena whispered, her eyes darting from the masked figure to Detective Vance, who was struggling to stay conscious against the armoire.
The masked man slowly reached up, his gloved fingers grasping the edge of the heavy black ski mask and pulling it off in one decisive motion. Beneath the mask was a face that was an exact, chilling carbon copy of Marcus—down to the high cheekbones, the deep-set eyes, and the faint scar near the left eyebrow.
“Surprised, sister-in-law?” the man asked, his voice returning to its natural, smooth register—a voice eerily similar to Marcus’s, yet carrying a sharper, more venomous edge. “Marcus was the public face, the charming real estate mogul. I was the one who handled the... complicated family arrangements.”
Sarah stepped out from behind the armoire, her face hardening into a mask of pure fury as she stared at the man who had kept her locked in the underground vault for three agonizing years.
“Lucas,” Sarah spat the name like a curse. “You bastard. You’re the one who threw me down those stairs.”
Lucas smiled, a cold, empty grin that lacked any trace of humanity. He kept his silenced pistol leveled at Elena, though his eyes flicked momentarily toward Maya, who was trembling behind Sarah.
“Someone had to protect the family fortune, Sarah,” Lucas replied smoothly, stepping further into the master bedroom. “Your father left everything to you and Elena, cutting Marcus and me out of the will completely. We simply corrected a clerical error made by a senile old man.”
Elena felt a cold rage building deep within her chest, pushing aside the fear and confusion that had paralyzed her moments before. She tightened her grip on the service weapon, her arm locking into a professional, steady stance she didn't know she possessed.
“You killed our parents,” Elena said, her voice dangerously quiet, cutting through the silence of the room like a razor blade. “And you let Marcus take the fall when it all went wrong.”
Lucas laughed, a short, barking sound devoid of humor.
“Marcus was always too soft,” Lucas said, taking another step forward. “He actually started to care about you and that little girl. He forgot what mission we started. But I didn't.”
Before Lucas could raise his pistol to fire, Maya dashed out from behind Sarah, running straight toward Lucas with a heavy brass bookend in her small hands.

“Leave my mommy alone!” Maya screamed, swinging the brass weight with all her might directly at Lucas’s shin.
