Chapter 14 - The Final Stand

The heavy brass bookend struck Lucas’s shin with a dull, sickening thud. Lucas winced in pain, his balance faltering as he stumbled sideways against the mahogany dresser, dropping his silenced pistol to the floor. The weapon skidded across the polished wood, coming to a stop near Detective Vance’s boots.

“Maya, get back!” Elena shouted, lunging forward to pull her daughter out of harm’s way just as Lucas recovered his balance, his face twisted into a mask of savage rage.

Lucas lunged toward Maya, his hands outstretched to grab the young girl by the collar, but Sarah intercepted him with a fierce tackle, driving her shoulder directly into his chest. Both of them crashed heavily to the floor, sending a ceramic lamp shattering into a thousand pieces against the baseboard.

Detective Vance, summoning his last remaining reserves of strength, crawled across the floor and scooped up his service weapon. He aimed it squarely at Lucas, who was currently pinning Sarah to the floor with a knee pressed into her chest.

“Stay right where you are, Lucas! Hands behind your head or I will fire!” Detective Vance commanded, his voice echoing authoritatively through the shattered bedroom.

Lucas froze, slowly lifting his hands off Sarah and raising them into the air. He glared at Elena with unadulterated hatred as Sarah rolled off him, gasping for air and coughing violently.

“You think locking me up changes anything?” Lucas sneered, blood trickling from a small cut on his lip. “The property deeds are already registered in an offshore shell corporation. This house, the money, everything belongs to me now. You’re standing on my land.”

Elena walked over slowly, standing directly above him with the cold steel of the service weapon still resting in her hand. She didn't point it at his head; she simply looked down at him with an expression of profound, absolute pity.

“You can keep the house, Lucas,” Elena said, her voice steady and clear. “You can keep every cent of the money you stole. Because by the time the federal marshals finish auditing your shell corporations tomorrow morning, you’ll be spending the rest of your natural life in a cell far smaller and darker than the one you built for my sister.”

Lucas’s confident smirk vanished entirely, replaced by the first genuine flicker of panic in his cold eyes.

Sirens wailed loudly outside the window, their red and blue lights flashing against the walls as multiple police cruisers and federal vehicles pulled up to the front yard, completely surrounding the estate.

Detective Vance stood up, pressing a hand against his bleeding shoulder, and motioned toward the doorway as two backup officers rushed into the room with heavy zip-ties ready.

“Take him away,” Vance ordered, turning his attention to Elena and Sarah as they pulled Maya into a tight, protective embrace in the center of the room.

As Lucas was hauled away in chains, his protests drowned out by the rising wail of sirens, Elena looked down at Maya, who wiped a stray tear from her cheek and looked up with a soft, genuine smile.
