Chapter 11 - The Master Bedroom Safe

The cool evening air rushed through the jagged hole in the basement wall, carrying the distant sound of flashing police sirens echoing up the suburban street. Elena and Sarah climbed out of the subterranean vault, their clothes dusty and stained with the grime of three years of hidden secrets. Maya walked between them, holding each of their hands as they emerged back into the pristine, elegant living room where the large crystal chandelier still cast its warm, gentle light.

Detective Vance was waiting by the front door, talking quietly into his radio while Marcus sat handcuffed in the back of a marked cruiser idling in the driveway.

“We’ve secured the perimeter,” Vance said as Elena and Sarah walked into the foyer. “Forensics will be here in twenty minutes to process the basement. But before we wrap up, Marcus insisted we check something in your master bedroom. He claimed there was a secondary safe containing documents vital to your safety.”

Elena froze, remembering Marcus’s parting words in the vault. She looked at Sarah, whose expression had darkened considerably.

“He’s playing another game,” Sarah warned, resting a hand on Elena’s arm. “Don't listen to him, El. Let the police handle it.”

“No,” Elena said, her voice hardening with resolve. “I need to see everything he hid from me. I need to know the full extent of his lies before I can ever sleep in this house again.”

Elena turned and walked down the short hallway toward the master bedroom, her footsteps echoing sharply against the polished wood floor. She pushed open the heavy mahogany door, stepping into the luxurious room she had shared with Marcus for a decade. The king-sized bed was neatly made, the scent of his sandalwood cologne still lingering faintly in the air.

She walked over to the large wooden armoire against the far wall, pushing aside her own clothes to reveal the small, biometric wall safe hidden behind a sliding panel—a safe Marcus had installed just last year, claiming it was for her jewelry.

Elena pressed her thumb against the scanner. The LED light flashed red twice before turning a solid, mocking green. The heavy steel door popped open with a quiet hiss.

Inside the safe, there was no jewelry, no money, and no legal documents. There was only a single, glowing laptop screen connected to a live video feed, broadcasting an angle of the living room they had just left.

On the screen, the front door of the house—which Detective Vance had supposedly locked—began to slowly open on its own.
