Chapter 7 - The Descent into the Earth

The pale blue light cast long, dancing shadows down the steep wooden steps of the hidden basement staircase. Elena clutched Maya tightly against her side, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. Sarah stood motionless in the doorway, the single candle flame steady despite the sudden, chilling draft blowing up from the depths below.

“Come down, Elena,” Sarah urged, her voice soft and devoid of any malice. “It’s time you saw what your husband has been hiding beneath your feet for the last three years.”

Elena hesitated, her gaze darting from Sarah’s calm face to the abyss of the stairway. The air rising from the basement carried a sharp, metallic tang mixed with the damp scent of turned earth and old paper.

“Where is Marcus?” Elena demanded, her voice trembling as she tried to keep her tone steady for Maya’s sake.

“Marcus is upstairs packing his bags,” Sarah replied, stepping further into the hallway and gesturing toward the open door. “He knows the truth is coming out. He’s been draining our family accounts for months, preparing to run the moment the house of cards collapsed.”

Maya pulled gently on Elena’s sleeve.

“Let’s go down, Mommy. I want to see where Daddy kept the boxes,” the young girl whispered eagerly.

Elena swallowed hard, her protective instincts overriding her paralyzingly fear. She took a tentative step forward, her black leather flats clicking softly against the top step. As she descended, the temperature dropped precipitously, her breath pluming in the air like pale smoke.

The basement was vastly larger than the footprint of the house above. It was a sprawling labyrinth of stone walls and iron-reinforced doors. Rows of metal shelving units stretched out into the gloom, stacked high with identical cardboard boxes, neatly labeled in Marcus’s precise handwriting.

Elena walked slowly down the central aisle, running her fingers along the dusty spine of a box labeled APRIL 2021 - ASSETS.

“He didn't just hide me down here, Elena,” Sarah’s voice echoed from the darkness ahead. “He hid everyone who stood between him and my father’s real estate empire.”

Elena stopped dead in her tracks. She held the candle high, the flickering light illuminating a series of framed photographs hanging from the damp stone walls. Every single photo featured women who looked remarkably like her and Sarah—their aunts, their cousins, all missing for years, presumed runaway or dead.

In the center of the wall hung a large, newly framed portrait of Elena herself, dressed in the red skirt, with a small red X marked across her face in permanent marker.

Before Elena could process the horror of the image, the heavy wooden door at the top of the stairs slammed shut with a thunderous crash, and the sound of a heavy padlock clicking into place echoed through the vault.
