Chapter 9 - The Ultimatum

The attic seemed to shrink, the walls closing in as Marcus Vance’s words hung in the suffocating air. Maya let out a sharp gasp, stumbling backward against her desk as the realization hit her: the experimental treatment keeping her alive had just been legally wiped out with a single signature.
"You can't do that," Maya whispered, her voice cracking as tears spilled over her lashes. "That trial... that’s my only chance."
Marcus didn't even look at her. His eyes remained fixed on Julian, enjoying the absolute dismantling of his greatest rival. "I'm afraid the law is entirely on my side, my dear. Your existence was concealed to defraud the corporate charter. Under federal statutes regarding hidden corporate liabilities, all medical assets funded by company reserves must be immediately seized and liquidated to pay back damages."
Julian stepped forward, closing the distance between himself and Marcus so fast the other man flinched. Julian’s hand shot out, grabbing Marcus by the lapels of his charcoal suit and shoving him hard against the wooden beam of the attic wall. The two security guards immediately stepped forward, reaching into their jackets, but a single raised hand from Julian froze them in their tracks.
"Touch her, and I will dismantle your entire life before the sun comes up," Julian snarled, his voice a lethal whisper inches from Marcus’s face. Every ounce of his corporate power, ruthless negotiation tactics, and suppressed rage concentrated into that single threat.
Marcus swallowed hard, though he maintained a strained, arrogant smile. "You can threaten me all you want, Julian. But anger doesn't pay hospital bills. A court order does. And right now, I hold the court order."
Elena finally stepped out from the shadows, her voice surprisingly steady despite the tears staining her cheeks. "There is another way, Marcus. You didn't come here just to deliver the papers. You want the northern shipping lanes. Take them. Release Maya’s medical trust, and I’ll sign over my personal holdings in the shipping division immediately."
Marcus raised an eyebrow, looking from Elena to Julian with genuine surprise. "Your personal holdings? That’s a bold offer, Elena. But it’s not enough."
Julian released Marcus’s suit jacket, smoothing down the lapels with cold precision as he stepped back. "What do you want, Marcus?"
Marcus smiled, a slow, predatory expression that reached his eyes. "I want your resignation as CEO, Julian. Effective immediately. Hand over the crown, and the girl gets her Zurich trial. Refuse, and watch her medical equipment get unplugged by sundown."
Julian stood frozen, looking back at Maya, who was shaking her head frantically from the corner of the room, tears streaming down her pale cheeks.

"Don't do it, Dad," Maya sobbed. "Don't give it all up for me."
