Chapter 13 - The Race Against Time

The vintage sedan tore down the winding mountain pass, its tires screeching against the sharp switchbacks as Clara’s cousin pushed the old engine to its absolute limit. In the back seat, Maya lay with her head resting in Elena’s lap, her breathing shallow and dangerously rapid. Julian sat beside them, gripping Maya’s cold hand in his own, feeling every erratic beat of her pulse like a countdown clock ticking down to zero.

"How long to the airstrip?" Julian demanded, leaning forward to look at the dashboard clock, which glowed a harsh green in the dim cabin.

"Twenty minutes if we don't hit the roadblock," the driver shouted back over the roar of the strained motor, gripping the steering wheel with white-knuckled intensity. "Marcus has county jurisdiction. If his men reach the private airfield before we do, they'll ground the medical transport."

Julian’s jaw tightened. He pulled out his encrypted satellite phone—the only device Marcus hadn't managed to wipe or seize—and rapidly punched in a sequence of emergency override codes.

"Who are you calling?" Elena asked softly, her voice uncharacteristically gentle as she brushed a stray strand of blonde hair from Maya’s pale forehead.

"The federal transport authority," Julian said, his voice hard as steel. "My corporate resignation was signed under duress and coercion. While it might take months to litigate in civil court, federal emergency aviation laws state that immediate life-saving medical transport cannot be legally grounded by a corporate receivership dispute."

Maya opened her eyes slightly, looking up at her father with a gaze full of fierce, trembling admiration. "You really are... a force of nature, Dad."

"I'm just a father trying to make up for lost time," Julian replied, offering a strained, reassuring smile that didn't quite reach his eyes.

Suddenly, two blinding sets of high-beam headlights flashed around the corner ahead, blocking the narrow two-lane road entirely. Two black corporate security SUVs stood parked sideways across the pavement, their doors flying open as four men in dark tactical gear stepped out, holding stop-paddles and flashlights.

"Hold on!" the driver yelled, slamming on the brakes, the car sliding sideways across the wet asphalt in a cloud of white smoke and screaming rubber.

Julian threw his arms protectively over Maya and Elena as the sedan came to a violent halt mere yards from the barricade. The security men marched forward, shouting orders and drawing their weapons.
