Chapter 12 - The Underground Escape

The air in the subterranean servant's tunnel was damp, smelling of ancient stone, damp earth, and decades of forgotten history. The only illumination came from the narrow beam of a heavy brass flashlight Clara held aloft, casting long, dancing shadows against the rough-hewn granite walls. Julian kept one arm firmly around Maya’s waist, supporting most of her weight as she navigated the uneven stone floor. Elena walked immediately behind them, her burgundy evening gown ruined, the hem stained black with mud and wet soil.

"How much further?" Julian asked, his voice echoing softly down the narrow corridor as Maya let out a sharp, suppressed gasp of pain.

"Just around the bend," Clara breathed, her voice shaking as she swept the flashlight beam across a heavy iron-studded wooden door set into the rock face. "This leads out to the old carriage road near the lower forest. My cousin has a car waiting there."

Julian nodded, focusing entirely on keeping his daughter upright. Every step was a battle against her failing stamina, but the adrenaline of survival pushed them forward. They reached the heavy iron door, and Clara fumbled with a heavy iron key she had pulled from the pocket of her apron. With a loud, protesting screech of rusted hinges, the door swung open, revealing the cool, star-lit night air of the forest outside.

A vintage black sedan idled quietly a hundred yards down the path, its headlights turned off. A man standing by the driver’s door waved frantically when he saw their flashlight beam.

"We're almost there, sweetheart," Julian murmured into Maya’s hair, carrying her the final few yards across the damp grass toward the waiting vehicle.

As they reached the car, Clara’s cousin—a burly man in a thick flannel jacket—hurried forward to open the rear door. Julian gently settled Maya into the back seat, ensuring her head was propped comfortably against a pile of blankets he had grabbed from the tunnel.

Elena slid in beside Maya, pulling a heavy wool coat over her daughter's shivering shoulders. Julian turned to follow them in, but paused as the sound of shouting echoed from the direction of the estate far above them on the cliff.

Flashlights cut through the dark tree canopy near the upper ridge. Marcus Vance’s security detail had discovered the broken seal of the underground tunnel.

"Get in, sir!" Clara’s cousin urged, grabbing Julian’s arm and shoving him into the back seat as he slammed the door shut.

The engine roared to life, tires spitting gravel as the car surged forward into the dark mountain pass, leaving the grand estate—and Julian’s former empire—far behind in the rearview mirror.
