Chapter 7 - The Inheritance of Debt

Elena’s words hung in the cramped attic like a physical threat. Julian stepped past Maya, placing himself defensively between his daughter and his wife. The air between the three of them crackled with a lethal, repressed tension.
"Protect us?" Julian’s voice was a low, dangerous rumble, every syllable edged with ice. "You built a cage, Elena. You manipulated us both for three years while pretending to be the gracious matriarch of this desolate estate. What else have you lied about? Is Maya even sick, or was that just another convenient barrier to keep her locked away up here?"
Maya gasped, clutching her chest as a wave of coughing overtook her. Julian immediately turned back, his hands hovering anxiously near her shoulders, terrified to touch her in case he caused her physical harm.
"She’s... she’s not lying about the heart," Maya managed to wheeze out between coughs, her face pale as parchment. "The illness is real, Dad. The doctors... they told her I wouldn't make it past twenty without experimental treatments."
Julian froze at the word. Dad. It was the first time she had used it, spoken through a fit of pain, yet it hit him with the force of a physical blow, grounding him instantly. He looked back at Elena, his eyes narrowing into slits.
"Experimental treatments," Julian repeated slowly. "Costly ones, I assume. The kind that require massive liquidity."
Elena raised her chin, her mask of composure slipping back into place with practiced ease. "The medical bills for her condition have drained three separate trust funds, Julian. The estate was mortgaged to its foundation six months ago just to secure her spot in the Zurich clinical trial. You thought your fortune was growing, but you were funding a ghost."
Julian’s mind raced, connecting the financial discrepancies he had ignored in his quarterly audits over the past year. The missing assets, the unassigned corporate expenditures, the offshore wire transfers—they weren't embezzlements or bad investments. They were Elena, quietly liquidating his empire to keep their daughter alive in secret.
"Why didn't you ask me?" Julian demanded, turning back to Elena. "If she needed money for medical trials, why hide it? Why lie?"
"Because your father’s will contained a clause you never bothered to read," Elena said softly, stepping closer to the edge of the room. "Any illegitimate child discovered within the bloodline forfeits fifty percent of the primary voting shares to the board. If the world found out about Maya, you would have lost control of everything you built."
Julian stared at his wife, realizing the terrifying depth of her pragmatism. She hadn't just lied out of malice; she had lied to preserve his dynasty at the expense of their humanity.
"I don't care about the shares," Julian said flatly. "I care about my daughter."

Before Elena could retort, a sharp, metallic crash echoed from the floor below, followed by the sound of heavy boots marching up the front steps of the manor.
