Chapter 6 - The Architect of Lies

The attic temperature seemed to drop ten degrees as Maya’s words hung suspended in the air. Julian stared at his daughter, the ground beneath his feet feeling as though it were shifting into an abyss.
"No," Julian said, shaking his head slowly, a denial born of pure shock. "Elena told me... she told me the tragedy happened right after birth. She said there was nothing left to save."
Maya gripped the edges of her desk so tightly her knuckles turned translucent. Her breath came in short, shallow gasps, the physical strain of the conversation clearly taxing her frail heart, but her mind remained razor-sharp.
"She lied to you," Maya whispered, her voice trembling not from weakness, but from a sudden, terrifying realization. "And she lied to me. She told me my father was a deadbeat who abandoned us before I drew my first breath, that he wanted nothing to do with a sickly child who would only drain his fortune."
Julian felt a cold, blinding rage ignite deep within his chest—not directed at Maya, nor even entirely at the frail girl before him, but at the woman waiting downstairs in the grand hallway. Elena had constructed an elaborate, multi-layered prison of deceit, keeping father and daughter separated under the exact same roof for three agonizing years, feeding each of them a customized narrative to ensure they never crossed paths.
"Why?" Julian muttered, pacing a tight circle in the center of the attic. "Why would she do that? What possible motive could she have to keep us apart while letting us live inches away from each other?"
Before Maya could answer, a heavy thud echoed from the spiral staircase below. Heavy, deliberate footsteps were ascending the iron rungs with surprising speed. Both Julian and Maya turned toward the open doorway as the shadows parted.
Elena stepped into the attic light. Her burgundy satin gown was slightly disheveled, and her usually immaculate updo had a few strands of blonde hair pulling loose. But it was the expression on her face that made Julian’s blood run cold. There was no remorse, no fear of exposure. Just a terrifying, hollow calm.
"Because, Julian," Elena said, her voice cutting cleanly through the quiet room as she stepped between them, "if you had known she was alive, your entire corporate empire would have been tied up in bitter custody battles, medical trusts, and public scandals before the ink on our marriage license was even dry."
Maya pushed herself up from the chair, swaying dangerously on her feet. "You lied to my entire life, Elena! You stole him from me, and you stole me from him!"
Elena didn't even look at Maya. Her cold, unblinking eyes remained locked entirely on Julian.

"I protected you both," Elena said coldly. "And now that you've broken the seal, Julian, you're about to find out what happens when you open Pandora's box."
