Chapter 3 - The Locked Door

Julian froze, the air leaving his lungs as Elena’s words hung heavily in the dusty studio. The ticking of a grandfather clock in the distant hallway sounded like a hammer blow against his eardrums. He looked from Elena’s tightly drawn face to Clara, who had covered her mouth with both hands, her eyes wide with sudden terror.
"Ill?" Julian repeated, the word tasting like ash. "What do you mean, ill? Why wasn't I told?"
Elena crossed her arms over her satin bodice, her posture defensive, erecting an invisible wall between him and the spiral staircase. "You were too busy building an empire, Julian. You were conquering markets, merging corporations, and traveling the globe. There was no room in your pristine, structured world for a sickly child born out of a past you paid to bury."
"Don't you dare," Julian growled, stepping up to her until they were mere inches apart. The restraint that usually defined him was fraying at the edges, replaced by a raw, primal panic. "If I have a daughter, her health is my business. Move aside, Elena."
Clara stepped forward, cautiously placing a hand on Julian’s sleeve. Her touch was feather-light, but it stopped him from pushing past his wife.
"Sir, Madam is right about the danger, but wrong about the rest," Clara said, her voice shaking. "Maya doesn't need your money, and she certainly doesn't need your anger. Her heart... her heart has been failing since she was ten years old. The doctors said excitement, shock, or severe emotional stress could stop it entirely. That’s why she was hidden away up here. That’s why she was never allowed to approach you."
Julian looked up the dark spiral staircase, the shadows seeming to swallow the light from the room below. The thought of a daughter he had never held, living just a few flights above him while tethered to a failing body, paralyzed him with a paralyzing mix of grief and fury.
"So you made her a prisoner in her own home?" Julian accused, his eyes locking back onto Elena.
"I kept her alive!" Elena shot back, her voice finally cracking, a single tear escaping to trace a path down her powdered cheek. "You think it was easy? Watching her sketch a man she was forbidden to love, knowing every heartbeat brought her closer to the edge?"
Julian ignored her, his resolve hardening into an immovable block of ice. He sidestepped his wife, his boots finding the first iron step of the winding staircase.

"Julian, stop!" Elena screamed, the sound sharp enough to shatter the glass in the overhead skylights. "If you walk up those stairs right now, you might literally kill her with the truth."
