Chapter 11 - The Collapsing World

Julian moved with desperate speed, catching Maya in his arms just as she hit the wooden floorboards. Her body felt impossibly light, like a fragile bird with broken wings. He pulled her close against his chest, feeling the frantic, irregular flutter of her heart beneath the thick knit of her oversized sweater.

"I've got you, Maya," Julian whispered fiercely, burying his face in her soft blonde hair as hot tears finally broke free, tracing tracks down his cheeks. "I've got you. The treatment is reinstated. You're going to Zurich."

Maya let out a weak, breathy laugh, resting her forehead against his shoulder. "You gave it all up... everything you worked for... for me."

"You are everything I never knew I was missing," Julian replied, his voice breaking.

Elena stood a few paces away, watching them with an expression of profound, hollow exhaustion. The formidable matriarch who had orchestrated a three-year deception now looked utterly defeated, stripped of her status, her secrets, and her control. She slowly sank into a nearby wooden chair, her hands resting limply in the lap of her burgundy satin gown.

"I'm sorry," Elena whispered, the words sounding small and foreign in the vastness of the attic.

Julian looked up, his eyes hardening slightly as he held his daughter safely in his arms. The forgiveness he owed his wife would take a lifetime to cultivate, if it ever came at all.

"Sorry doesn't fix the walls you built, Elena," Julian said quietly. "And it doesn't give us back the three years we lost."

Before Elena could respond, the distant wail of emergency sirens began to echo up from the winding mountain road below the estate. Clara appeared breathless at the top of the spiral staircase, her white apron stained with dust, her eyes wide with panic.

"Sir! Madam!" Clara cried out, clinging to the iron doorframe. "An ambulance and three unmarked black cars just turned into the main gates! They aren't waiting for morning—they're moving in to enforce the receivership immediately!"

Julian tightened his grip on Maya. "We need to get her out of here now. Before they clear the grounds."

"There's no time to use the front exit," Elena said, her voice snapping back into a sharp, decisive register as she stood up from her chair. "Marcus didn't just seize the company; he froze all personal accounts, including our travel funds. The only way out is through the old underground servant's tunnel leading down to the valley."

Julian looked down at Maya, who nodded weakly against his chest, whispering, "I can walk, Dad. Just... help me stand."
