Chapter 8 - The Uninvited Guest

The heavy thud of multiple boots marching across the grand hallway downstairs sent a sudden tremor through the old floorboards of the attic. Julian stiffened, his instincts as a corporate titan immediately shifting into crisis mode. He stepped away from Maya, who was still catching her breath against the edge of the desk, and turned his gaze toward the open doorway.
"Elena," Julian said, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. "Who is downstairs?"
Elena didn't answer immediately. Her composure finally fractured, her eyes darting toward the narrow spiral staircase with genuine panic. The impenetrable facade of the wealthy matriarch dissolved, revealing a woman cornered by her own cascading secrets.
"You shouldn't have come back early from the London summit," Elena whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "They weren't supposed to track the wire transfers here until next week."
"Who?" Julian demanded, grabbing her by the velvet elbow of her burgundy gown. "Who is downstairs, Elena?"
"The board," a deep, unfamiliar voice echoed up the stairwell before Elena could reply.
The heavy, rhythmic tread of expensive shoes climbed the iron rungs, and a tall, silver-haired man in a charcoal suit emerged into the attic doorway. Behind him stood two burly security guards in dark uniforms, blocking the exit entirely. It was Marcus Vance, Julian’s primary corporate rival and the majority shareholder of the opposing voting bloc.
Marcus took in the scene with slow, calculated amusement—the dusty art studio, the frail blonde girl clutching her sweater, the stunned expression on Julian’s face, and Elena standing defeated near the corner.
"Well, well, well," Marcus drawled, stepping casually across the threshold as if he owned the estate. "It turns out the rumors floating around the financial district are entirely true. The untouchable Julian Vance does have a skeleton in his closet—literally locked in the attic."
Julian instinctively stepped in front of Maya, shielding her from Marcus’s predatory gaze. A cold, blinding fury surged through his veins.
"Get out of my house, Marcus," Julian said, his voice dangerously low. "You are trespassing."
Marcus chuckled, pulling a folded legal document from his breast pocket and waving it lazily in the air. "Not anymore, Julian. Thanks to a few anonymous tips regarding unauthorized asset liquidation and hidden dependents, the board has enacted emergency clause 14-B. As of three minutes ago, your voting shares are frozen, and this estate—along with every asset attached to it—is under receivership."
Elena covered her face with her hands, a muffled sob escaping her lips.
Marcus stepped closer, his eyes lingering on the hundreds of charcoal portraits covering the walls before shifting back to Julian with a malicious grin.

"And as for your newly discovered daughter," Marcus added smoothly, "her medical trust has just been legally declared fraudulent. The funding for her Zurich trial has been canceled."
