Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Sacrifice

The silence in the attic was heavy, punctuated only by the shallow, ragged breathing of Maya as she gripped the edge of her desk for support. Julian looked at his daughter—the girl he had only known for less than an hour, yet who had spent three years immortalizing his face in charcoal and ink. Then he looked at Marcus, who stood waiting with the cold, unyielding patience of a corporate executioner holding a stopwatch.
"Your time is running out, Julian," Marcus said smoothly, glancing at his designer wristwatch. "By midnight, the injunction becomes permanent, and the hospital in Zurich will drop her from the patient registry. You have sixty seconds to decide whether your title or your daughter’s heartbeat matters more."
Elena stepped forward, her burgundy satin gown rustling sharply against the floorboards. She reached out, catching Julian’s arm with fingers that felt like ice. "Julian, do it. You built an empire once from nothing; you can do it again. But she only has one life."
Julian didn't look at his wife. His eyes remained locked on Marcus. The decades of ruthless ambition, the late nights in corporate boardrooms, the enemies he had crushed to reach the absolute summit of the financial world—it all suddenly felt like ash. None of it mattered. The empire was just glass and steel. Maya was flesh and blood.
"Give me the pen," Julian said quietly, his voice devoid of emotion, carrying the terrifying calm of a man making peace with his own destruction.
Marcus smiled triumphantly, pulling a sleek gold fountain pen from his pocket along with a single printed document, handing them over without a word. Julian didn't hesitate. He leaned against the edge of the wooden work table, pressed the nib to the paper, and signed his name with firm, sweeping strokes, formally relinquishing control of Vance Global Industries and every voting share he owned.
"Done," Julian said, thrusting the signed document back into Marcus’s hands. "Now, pick up your phone, call the clinic in Zurich, and reinstate her treatment immediately. Put it on speaker."
Marcus checked the signature, his eyes gleaming with greedy satisfaction. He nodded to one of the security guards, who handed him a secure satellite phone. Marcus dialed a sequence of numbers, waited a moment, and handed the phone to Julian.
"Dr. Vance," a crisp, accented voice answered on the other end. "Patient file 409 is cleared for immediate transport and surgery. The trust has been fully funded."
Julian exhaled a long, shuddering breath he felt like he had been holding for three years. He handed the phone back to Marcus, who turned on his heel and walked toward the spiral staircase, his guards following closely behind.
"Pleasure doing business with you, former CEO," Marcus murmured over his shoulder before disappearing down the steps.

As the heavy footsteps faded into the distance, Julian turned around to face his daughter. Maya was sliding down the side of her desk, her knees buckling beneath her.
