Chapter 4 - The Broken Promise

The sound of the silver wax cracking under Henderson’s thumb echoed sharply in the quiet room.

Chloe gasped, pulling the newborn closer to her chest as if the breaking seal represented a physical threat to her child. Sarah stepped in front of Chloe again, her professional detachment cracking as anger flashed in her blue eyes.

"You have no authority to open legal documents in a patient's room without a court-appointed advocate present," Sarah snapped, glaring at the lawyer.

Henderson didn't flinch. He pulled a folded sheet of heavy cream-colored paper from the envelope, letting his eyes scan the printed text before looking up at Clara.

"The court-appointed advocate is currently reviewing the primary jurisdiction filing in the lobby," Henderson replied evenly. "As for the medical trust, it stipulates that upon the birth of a direct genetic heir matching the Vance lineage, custody defaults immediately to the estate's surviving primary trustee."

Clara stared at the lawyer, the pieces of a horrifying puzzle snapping into place with sickening clarity. "You're talking about me. Arthur named me trustee."

"He named you the administrator," Henderson corrected, his gaze sharpening. "With one explicit condition: that you prove the child's genetic viability through independent verification, or the entire trust—and Julian's remaining inheritance—is forfeited to a biomedical research foundation."

Chloe stared at Clara, the defensive terror in her eyes turning into a profound, suffocating betrayal.

"You didn't come here because you wanted to see your granddaughter," Chloe said, her voice shaking violently. "You came here to take her away for your dead husband's ghost."

"That's not true," Clara pleaded, taking a step toward the bed, her hands outstretched in a helpless gesture. "I didn't know about the trust, Chloe. I swear to you, I only found out about this pregnancy this morning when Julian called me in a panic."

"Julian called you?" Chloe whispered, her face pale. "He told me he was going to buy diapers."

Clara stopped dead in her tracks, the chilling implications of Julian's sudden disappearance settling over her like a shroud.

Before anyone could speak, the hospital room phone mounted on the wall began to ring shrilly, demanding an answer that none of them were prepared to give.
