Chapter 14 - The Final standoff

The sound of Henderson’s footsteps descending the metal stairs sent a surge of adrenaline through Clara’s veins.

"Move," Clara commanded, grabbing Julian by the arm and pulling him down the steps toward the ground floor exit. "We're not having this conversation in Arthur's trap."

Julian didn't resist. He stumbled forward, leading them down the final flight of concrete steps until they burst through the exit doors into the ground-floor ambulance bay.

The cool night air hit them instantly, carrying the scent of damp pavement and distant pine trees. Flashing blue and red lights painted the wet asphalt outside as two state police cruisers pulled up with their sirens wailing, blocking the exit driveway.

Two state troopers emerged from the lead cruiser, their hands resting on their holstered sidearms as they assessed the chaotic scene.

"Hold right there! State police! Keep your hands where we can see them!" the lead trooper commanded, stepping toward the ambulance bay doors.

Mr. Henderson and his security detail emerged from the stairwell door just seconds behind them, raising their hands defensively as the troopers turned their attention toward the group.

"Officer, thank goodness," Henderson said smoothly, stepping forward with his corporate ID badge displayed. "I am legal counsel for the Vance Estate. We have an ongoing custody dispute regarding an infant currently in the possession of unauthorized persons."

"Don't listen to him, Officer!" Clara shouted over the sound of the idling cruiser engines. She stepped past Julian, holding up the medical trust documents and the genetic report. "This man represents an illegal medical trust that engaged in unauthorized human reproductive experimentation and identity fraud."

The trooper looked between Henderson and Clara, his hand resting firmly on his holster. "Everybody calm down. Ma'am, step back with the baby. Let's sort this out one at a time."

Chloe clutched the newborn tightly, her eyes fixed on the police cruisers as safety finally seemed within reach. "Please protect my baby. They want to take her away for a dead man's legacy."

Julian stepped in front of Chloe, shielding her from the security guards behind them. "Officer, I'm Julian Vance. I am turning over all estate archives and experimental logs to the state attorney general's office right now."

Julian tossed his white envelope onto the hood of the nearest police cruiser, where it slid across the metal and came to a stop beside the flashing light bar.

Henderson’s face twisted in sudden rage. "Julian, you fool! You're destroying everything your father built!"

"My father built a prison," Julian said, his voice echoing in the night air. "And it's time to tear it down."
