Chapter 12 - The Fire Exit stairs

The heavy metallic thud of the stairwell door echoing down the corridor broke the tense stillness of the maternity ward.
Sarah didn't hesitate. She grabbed a portable medical pack from the counter, slinging the strap over her grey scrubs. "The emergency stairwell leads directly to the ground floor ambulance bay. If we move now before the security detail reorganizes, we can reach the state police cruisers."
Chloe stood up slowly from the hospital bed, pulling the light blue gown tighter around her waist and cradling the newborn securely against her chest. Her face was pale, but the fear in her eyes had been replaced by an ironclad determination.
"Let's go," Chloe whispered.
Clara took the lead, pushing open the heavy double doors of the maternity room. The hallway outside was bathed in the same pulsing crimson emergency light. Dust motes danced in the air around the flickering fixtures, and the distant sound of a fire alarm began to wail in the north wing of the hospital.
Mr. Henderson watched them from near the window, making no move to stop them. A strange, bitter smile touched the corners of the lawyer's mouth.
"You think the police will save you, Clara?" Henderson called out softly as they reached the threshold. "Arthur didn't just build a medical trust. He bought the jurisdiction that oversees it. By morning, every document in that room will legally belong to the Vance Foundation."
Clara didn't look back. "Tell Arthur's ghost he lost."
She stepped out into the hallway, flanking Chloe with Sarah right beside them. They moved quickly and quietly toward the heavy fire exit door at the end of the corridor. The red exit sign glowed fiercely above the metal handle.
Clara pushed the bar down. The heavy door swung open, revealing the cold concrete steps of the stairwell descending into darkness.
As they stepped across the threshold into the stairwell, a sudden flash of light illuminated the landing below them.
Julian stood on the landing three steps down, his face bruised and streaked with dirt, holding a second white envelope identical to the one on the tray table.
May you like
"Mom," Julian choked out, his voice cracking as he looked up at them. "Don't go down there. You need to see what's in this envelope first. It changes everything about who I am."
