Chapter 2 - The Weight of Silver Wax

The silence in the maternity room grew suffocating, broken only by the steady, rhythmic beep of a heart monitor somewhere down the hall.

Clara stared at the white envelope on the tray table, the gleaming silver wax seal catching the harsh overhead light like a tiny, frozen mirror. Her mind raced backward through decades of carefully guarded memories, searching for any fracture in the foundation of her family history.

"That's impossible," Clara murmured, taking another involuntary step toward the bed. "My son's name is on the birth certificate. Julian is the father. I know it."

Sarah, the nurse, didn't lower her arm. Her expression remained firm, a human barricade protecting a mother in shock.

"Step back, Ms. Sterling," Sarah instructed, her voice steady and professional. "You heard what the patient said. You have no legal right to approach this child until those documents are verified by the hospital administration."

Chloe clutched the newborn tighter, burying her face softly against the baby's downy head.

"Julian isn't the father," Chloe said, her voice stronger now, fueled by a desperate kind of courage. "And neither are you connected to this little girl. Look at the seal, Clara. Look at who sent it to this hospital before you even managed to drive across the city."

Clara’s gaze drifted from Chloe’s tear-streaked face back to the tray table. The silver wax bore an imprint she recognized instantly—not Julian’s signet, but the heavy, ornate crest of Arthur Vance, Clara’s estranged husband and Julian’s cold, manipulative father. Panic, sharp and metallic, flared in Clara's chest. Arthur had been dead for three years, or so she had been told.

"Arthur," Clara whispered, the name tasting like ash on her tongue. "He had nothing to do with this."

"That's where you're wrong," a calm, chillingly familiar voice echoed from the doorway behind Clara.

Clara spun around, her burgundy jacket swirling, to find Arthur’s former legal counsel, Mr. Henderson, stepping out of the shadows of the corridor with a second, identical envelope in his hand.
