Chapter 10 - The Ghost in the Photograph

Clara’s hand reached out slowly, her fingers trembling as she picked up the small, weathered photograph from the stainless steel tray.
The edges were yellowed with age. The woman in the picture had the same short dark reddish-brown hair, the same determined set of the jaw, and the same burgundy blazer Clara wore today. But the date stamped on the back read October 14, 1991—five years before Julian was ever born.
"Who is this?" Clara whispered, her voice barely audible as she looked up at Mr. Henderson.
The lawyer stared at the photograph, his composure entirely gone. The color had drained completely from his face, leaving him looking older and far more vulnerable.
"Where did you find that?" Henderson demanded, taking an involuntary step forward.
"It was inside the trust documents," Sarah said, stepping protectively between the lawyer and the tray table. "Answer the question, Mr. Henderson. Who is the woman in this photograph?"
Chloe clutched her baby closer, her eyes wide with mounting horror as she looked from the photograph to Clara. "Clara... that woman looks exactly like you. It's almost like looking into a mirror."
"It's not a mirror," Clara said, a sickening wave of nausea washing over her as the terrifying truth began to assemble itself in her mind. "It's me. But I never had a child in 1991. Julian was born in 1998."
Henderson swallowed hard, his eyes darting toward the door where the two security guards stood watching in silence. "Arthur had... experimental memory-suppression protocols implemented at the Vance Institute during the early nineties. You signed the medical waivers yourself, Clara, after your first difficult delivery."
Clara dropped the photograph as if it were burning her skin. "My first delivery? You're telling me I had a child before Julian, and Arthur had my memories erased?"
"The trust required absolute genetic purity," Henderson admitted quietly, the confession slipping out like a long-held confession of guilt. "Arthur couldn't risk emotional attachment interfering with his legacy project. Julian was your second-born, Clara. Your first-born was taken away and placed into the trust's foundational lineage thirty-five years ago."
The hospital administrator stared in sheer disbelief. "This is medical malpractice on a scale I've never encountered in thirty years of healthcare administration. I'm calling federal authorities right now."

Before the administrator could pull his phone from his pocket, the overhead lights in the maternity ward flickered violently and then clicked off completely, plunging the room into emergency red lighting.
