Chapter 11 - Darkness in the Ward

The sudden shift from sterile fluorescent light to the dull, pulsing crimson glow of the emergency backup system cast long, distorted shadows across the hospital room walls.
The heart monitor by the bed let out a brief, electronic stutter before stabilizing on battery power.
"What happened?" Sarah asked sharply, her hands moving instinctively to shield the newborn in Chloe's arms. "A power failure in this wing doesn't happen unless the main breaker was tripped from the outside."
Mr. Henderson reached instinctively for his briefcase, his eyes darting toward the darkened hallway. "The estate's security protocol. If the federal authorities are mentioned, the building's digital grid isolates automatically."
Clara ignored the lawyer, her eyes locked on the weathered photograph resting on the tray table. The face of the woman from 1991 stared back at her under the red light, a silent ghost demanding justice.
"Arthur is dead," Clara said, her voice steady despite the chaos around them. "And yet his shadow is still controlling every move we make. But this ends tonight."
Chloe looked up, her breathing shallow and fast. "What are you going to do, Clara? They've locked down the building. We're trapped here with a dead man's lawyers and security guards."
"We're not trapped," Clara replied, stepping resolutely toward the door. She looked past the two security guards, who looked visibly uncertain under the emergency lights. "We have the genetic proof, we have the trust documentation, and we have the truth."
"You can't leave the room, Ms. Sterling," one of the guards said, shifting his stance but making no move to block her path physically. "Orders from the administrator are clear."
"The administrator's orders were based on incomplete information," Clara said, her voice carrying an authority that commanded instant obedience. She turned to the administrator. "Director, call the state police directly on your personal mobile device. Report a multi-generational medical fraud and unauthorized human experimentation at St. Jude’s maternity ward."
The administrator hesitated for a fraction of a second, then pulled his phone from his pocket, tapping the screen with shaking fingers. "Dialing now."
Mr. Henderson took a frantic step toward the door. "You're destroying forty years of legacy, Clara! You don't know what Arthur uncovered in those archives. If the trust collapses, Julian loses everything!"
"Julian lost his soul the moment he agreed to help his father hide this nightmare," Clara said coldly. She turned back to Chloe and Sarah. "Hold my hand. We're getting out of here."

As the administrator spoke quietly into his phone, the emergency lights flickered once more, and a heavy, metallic thud echoed from the corridor outside the double doors—the sound of the fire exit stairs being unsealed.
