Chapter 3 - The Shadow of a Ghost

Mr. Henderson adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, his graying hair and immaculate charcoal suit making him look entirely out of place in the maternity ward.
"Good afternoon, Clara," Henderson said, his tone devoid of warmth. "I see you managed to arrive before the legal injunction was formally served."
Clara’s heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird. She looked from the lawyer to the sealed envelope on the hospital tray, and finally back to Chloe, whose defensive posture had shifted into something resembling fearful exhaustion.
"What is this game?" Clara demanded, stepping away from the doorway and confronting the lawyer directly. "Arthur is gone. Julian is my only living son. Why is there a DNA test on a newborn baby bearing my late husband's personal seal?"
Henderson sighed softly, a gesture rehearsed and entirely devoid of empathy.
"Arthur anticipated many things before his passing, Clara, including the inevitable collapse of Julian's life," Henderson replied smoothly. "He established a private medical trust. This child was conceived through advanced fertility preservation protocols using genetic material that Julian surrendered years ago under a binding family pact."
Chloe looked up, her brown eyes wide with confusion and betrayal. "He told me it was a closed adoption registry match. He never told me the family was tied to an empire built on lies."
Clara felt the floor tilt beneath her feet. Julian had never mentioned fertility clinics, nor had he ever spoken of his father's medical trusts. She had raised Julian alone after Arthur retreated into his obsidian tower of wealth and isolation, or so she had always believed.
"Julian didn't know," Clara said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "My son didn't know about any of this."

"Your son knows exactly what his father permitted him to know," Henderson countered, stepping closer to the tray table. He reached out, his gloved fingers breaking the silver wax seal on the envelope resting beside Chloe. "And now, the terms of the trust dictate an immediate custody review."
