Chapter 9

The digital clock on the guest room nightstand glowed 9:00 AM sharp. Across town, inside the gleaming glass-and-steel monolith of Sterling Global Enterprises, Julian’s quarterly board meeting had just commenced on the forty-fifth floor. Elena stood by the window of the penthouse, watching the gray clouds part over the East River. Her phone buzzed in her palm. It was a text message from David Thorne: “We are filing now. Sheriff is en route to the tower. Execute phase two.”
Elena turned to Lily, who was dressed neatly in a comfortable blue cardigan and skirt. "Come on, sweetie. We’re going on a little trip. We’re going to visit grandma’s house in the country, and we won't ever have to come back here."
Packing had been done discreetly the night before—just two small suitcases hidden in the back of the walk-in closet. Within ten minutes, Elena and Lily were inside the private elevator, descending past the fifty floors of luxury that had served as their gilded cage. Marcus Vance was waiting by the service exit downstairs, holding the door open with a quiet, knowing nod.
"Car’s waiting around the corner, Mrs. Sterling," Marcus said softly, keeping his voice steady despite the risk he was taking. "Good luck to you and the little one."
"Thank you, Marcus. You saved us," Elena said, pressing a sealed envelope containing relocation funds into his hand before rushing toward the idling sedan.
Meanwhile, on the forty-fifth floor of Sterling Global, the heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open. Julian was mid-sentence, presenting the quarterly revenue projections to a dozen senior executives, when two uniformed county sheriff’s deputies walked into the room, flanked by David Thorne.
Julian stopped talking, his sharp features hardening into an expression of absolute disbelief. He set his laser pointer down on the mahogany table, adjusting his bow tie with stiff, deliberate movements.
"Gentlemen, this is a private meeting," Julian said, his voice dripping with aristocratic disdain as he addressed the officers. "You are trespassing."

The lead deputy stepped forward, holding out a thick stack of legal documents. "Julian Sterling, you are being served with an emergency protective order, a temporary restraining order regarding your minor child, and a motion for asset freezing based on verified evidence of domestic sabotage and fraud. You are legally required to cease all contact with Elena Sterling and Lily Sterling immediately."
The boardroom erupted into murmurs. Julian stood frozen, the immaculate armor of his corporate perfection shattering in front of his peers for the very first time.
