Chapter 8

Returning to the penthouse felt like walking back into the lions' den. The evening lights of the city glittered coldly across the living room floor where Lily had wept less than forty-eight hours ago. Elena found her daughter sitting quietly at the kitchen island, drawing pictures with colored pencils on a pad of paper. Lily looked up as Elena approached, her wide, innocent eyes searching her mother’s face for reassurance.

"Is everything going to be okay, Mommy?" Lily asked softly, holding up a crayon drawing of the three of them standing under a bright yellow sun.

Elena swallowed the lump in her throat, knelt beside her daughter, and wrapped her arms around the small, fragile frame. "Everything is going to be fine, my sweet girl. I promise you, nobody is ever going to make you feel scared in this home again."

Julian returned home late, his suit jacket draped over his arm and his tie loosened slightly. He looked tired, the relentless drive of his corporate life etching faint lines around his eyes. He poured himself a glass of scotch at the wet bar and looked over at Elena, who sat calmly reading a book by the window.

"You’ve been out all afternoon," Julian noted, his tone flat and probing. "Running errands? Or visiting lawyers who told you you have no case?"

Elena didn't look up from her book at first. She turned a page slowly, letting the silence stretch just long enough to make him uncomfortable before closing the volume and raising her eyes to meet his.

"I’ve been taking care of business, Julian," she replied evenly. "Just like you taught me to."

Julian’s eyes narrowed slightly, searching her face for any sign of panic or surrender. Finding only calm resolve, a flicker of genuine irritation crossed his features. He was a man who thrived on predictable reactions—tears, anger, pleading. Calm defiance was an anomaly he didn't know how to process.

"You’re playing a very dangerous game, Elena," Julian warned quietly, stepping closer. "People who step out of line in my world usually find themselves falling off the edge. Don't mistake my patience for weakness."

"I stopped making that mistake a long time ago," Elena said, standing up to face him without flinching. She held his gaze with unwavering strength, letting him see the steel beneath the emerald satin. "Get a good night's sleep, Julian. Tomorrow is going to be a very busy day for both of us."
