Chapter 2

The shock of Elena’s strike lingered in the massive living room like smoke after an explosion. Julian lay on the marble floor for a fraction of a second, the immaculate silk of his black suit dusting against the stone, before he propped himself up on one elbow. A red welt bloomed across his sharp jawline, stark against his pale skin. He did not yell back; instead, a slow, chilling smile touched the corners of his mouth. It was the smile of a predator who realized his prey had finally bared its teeth, giving him the excuse he needed to hunt.

Elena stood over him, her chest heaving beneath the emerald satin. Her hands were trembling now, not from fear, but from the adrenaline crash following years of suppressed resentment. She looked down at the man she had married, realizing with absolute clarity that she no longer knew him. He was a stranger draped in bespoke tailoring and expensive cologne, a man who weaponized his own daughter to test boundaries of control.

"You’ve lost your mind, Elena," Julian said softly, his voice dangerously level as he pushed himself up. He brushed imaginary dust from his trousers, his composure terrifyingly intact. "Hitting me in our own home? In front of the child? This proves everything I just said. The instability in this house starts at the top."

Elena pulled Lily closer behind her, shielding the girl from Julian’s cold gaze. "Don't you dare turn this around," Elena hissed, her voice trembling with restrained fury. "You planted that brooch in her room, Julian. I know you did. You wanted a reason to break us down, to prove your dominance over every breathing soul in this apartment."

Julian tilted his head, neither confirming nor denying the accusation, which made it all the more damning. He adjusted his bow tie, the gesture maddeningly routine. "Think whatever helps you sleep tonight, darling. But security sees everything. The cameras in the hallway record every entry and exit. If that brooch isn't returned to my study by midnight, I’m calling the authorities. Let’s see how society treats a thief for a daughter."

With that, Julian turned on his heel and walked toward his private wing, leaving a chasm of cold air in his wake. Elena looked down at Lily, whose small hand clutched her thumb. The war for their survival had officially begun, and there was no turning back.
