Chapter 7

The rain began to lash against the reinforced glass of David Thorne’s downtown office, blurring the sprawling view of the Manhattan skyline into gray streaks. David sat behind a minimalist glass desk, his graying hair and sharp, analytical eyes conveying decades of legal warfare. He watched quietly as the video footage looped for the third time on his laptop screen.

When the video finally ended, David closed the laptop lid with a soft click. He removed his reading glasses, rubbed the bridge of his nose, and looked up at Elena, who sat across from him with her posture locked in rigid defiance.

"This is textbook emotional abuse, Elena, and legally, it borders on criminal endangerment of a minor," David said, his voice measured and professional. "If we take this to family court with Marcus Vance’s testimony and these server logs, a judge will strip Julian of joint custody immediately. Furthermore, the financial fraud regarding your foundation shares gives us immense leverage in the divorce proceedings."

"He thinks he’s untouchable, David," Elena said, her voice tight with suppressed emotion. "Julian has spent years building alliances with judges, board members, and local politicians. He believes his wealth insulates him from consequences."

"Wealth provides insulation, not immunity," David countered firmly, leaning forward. "However, we have to play this chess match carefully. If Julian catches wind of what we’re planning before we file the emergency injunction, he will liquidate his liquid assets, offshore the foundation funds, and attempt to paint you as an unstable, violent spouse—using the very slap you gave him in the living room as primary evidence."

Elena winced slightly at the reminder of her loss of composure. "I played right into his hands when I struck him."

"Human beings aren't machines, Elena. You reacted like a mother whose child was under attack," David said reassuringly. "Julian engineered that reaction. But we can use it to our advantage if we frame it correctly in court—not as unprovoked violence, but as a defensive response to sustained psychological abuse."

David stood up, walking over to the rain-streaked window. "Here is our strategy. We wait until tomorrow morning, when Julian is locked into his quarterly board meeting—a three-hour window where he legally cannot leave the premises or access his private servers. At that exact moment, we file the emergency protective order, secure Lily’s full custody, and freeze his corporate accounts. It will be a blitzkrieg. He won't know what hit him until the sheriff is serving him papers at the boardroom table."
