Chapter 6

With the flash drive clutched tightly in her palm like a lifeline, Elena knew she had mere hours before Julian’s IT surveillance team realized system logs had been exported. She secured Lily in the nursery with a stack of favorite books and instructions to keep the door bolted from the inside. Moving quickly through the quiet expanse of the penthouse, Elena booted up her personal laptop on the mahogany desk in the guest suite, away from Julian’s monitored network.

She plugged in the small black drive. The directory opened instantly, revealing three encrypted video files labeled with timestamps from the previous afternoon. Her hands hovered over the trackpad as she clicked the first file. The video feed was crystal clear, capturing the high-definition lens of the hallway camera outside Lily’s bedroom.

The timestamp read 3:42 PM. The corridor was empty, bathed in the natural afternoon light filtered through the skyscraper’s glass panels. Then, the private elevator chimed, and Julian stepped out. He was dressed in a lighter gray suit for his afternoon meetings, his posture rigid and purposeful. He walked directly to Lily’s door, pulled a brass key from his pocket—a key he claimed only the housekeeper possessed—and let himself inside.

Elena watched the counter advance. Two minutes and forty-five seconds later, Julian emerged. He no longer carried the small velvet pouch he had slipped into his pocket earlier; instead, his hands were empty. The footage was irrefutable, damning, and cold. It was premeditated psychological warfare executed against a seven-year-old child.

She opened the second file, which contained audio logs from the smart-home intercom system. She clicked play, and Julian’s voice filled the quiet guest room. He was talking on his encrypted mobile phone to an unknown associate.

"The girl is the pressure point," Julian’s recorded voice stated smoothly. "Once Elena realizes the child is labeled a thief, she’ll fold under the social pressure. The divorce settlement will be signed within the week, and the foundation board will hand over her shares without a fight."

Elena stopped the audio, her breath catching in her throat. This wasn't just about a lost brooch or a domestic dispute; it was a calculated conspiracy to strip her of her parental rights and her multi-million-dollar stake in her family’s philanthropic foundation. Julian had engineered the entire crisis to destroy her credibility.

She needed legal representation that Julian couldn't buy, intimidate, or compromise. Reaching for her phone, she dialed a number she hadn't called in ten years—David Thorne, a brilliant, unrelenting family law attorney who had warned her against marrying Julian in the first place.
