Chapter 3

Night fell over the Manhattan skyline, turning the floor-to-ceiling windows into giant black mirrors reflecting the interior tension of the penthouse. Elena sat on the edge of Lily’s canopy bed, softly stroking the girl’s hair until her breathing finally steadied into deep, exhausted sleep. The light pink dress had been folded and placed on a chair, a quiet symbol of a childhood interrupted by adult cruelty.

Elena slipped out of the room, her bare feet making no sound on the hardwood hallway. The penthouse was vast, designed by architects who prioritized minimalist aesthetics over warmth. Every shadow seemed to hide a reminder of Julian’s omnipresent control. She walked toward the master suite, pausing at the heavy mahogany door of Julian’s private study. The room was locked—it always was. But tonight, the smart-home keypad glowed faintly with a blue light. Julian had left the system primed.

She knew the security protocols. She had helped design them during their marriage’s happier, more naive years. Punching in a sequence based on Lily’s birthday, she held her breath. The light flashed green, and the heavy lock clicked open with a mechanical sigh.

Inside, the study smelled of aged leather, expensive scotch, and printer ink. The walls were lined with ledgers, digital monitors, and filing cabinets containing the blueprints of Julian’s financial empire. Elena moved directly to the oak desk where the missing diamond brooch was supposed to have been kept. She pulled open the velvet-lined drawer, finding it completely empty except for a single manila folder labeled with her own maiden name.

Frowning, she opened the folder. Inside were bank statements, property deeds, and surveillance logs detailing her movements over the past six months. Julian hadn't just suspected her; he had been investigating her like an adversary in a corporate takeover. He was preparing to divorce her, strip her of custody, and leave her with nothing, using Lily as the ultimate leverage.

A soft click behind her made her blood run cold. Elena spun around to find Julian standing in the doorway, leaning against the frame with a glass of amber liquid in his hand. He looked entirely unsurprised to find her trespassing.

"Looking for your inheritance, my dear?" Julian asked, his voice dripping with condescension. "Or perhaps just trying to find out how easily your entire life can be erased?"
