Chapter 15

Marcus Vance shook his head slowly on the other side of the glass, his expression calm and devoid of malice. "No, Mr. Sterling. Mrs. Elena didn't send me. In fact, she’s miles away, living a peaceful life where your name is no longer part of the conversation. I came here on my own accord."

Julian gripped the plastic receiver tightly, his knuckles turning white. "Then why are you here? To watch me rot in a cage?"

"To tell you that you missed the entire point," Marcus said softly, his voice carrying clearly through the speaker. "You spent your whole life building walls, buying loyalty, and treating people like data points on a spreadsheet. You thought power meant having control over everyone and everything around you. But real power isn't about fear or dominance, Mr. Sterling. It’s about love, honesty, and the courage to be vulnerable."

Julian stared through the scratched glass, unable to find a retort, a loophole, or a corporate counter-argument. The silence stretched between them, heavy and absolute, stripping away the last vestiges of his pride.

"She’s safe, isn't she?" Julian asked quietly, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. "Lily?"

"She’s happier than she’s ever been," Marcus replied honestly. "She’s laughing, painting, and growing up in a home filled with warmth instead of glass and surveillance cameras. You lost them, Julian, because you cared more about winning a game than holding onto a family."

Marcus stood up, placing the receiver back on its cradle. He gave Julian one final, lingering look before turning and walking out of the visitation room, leaving Julian alone with the ghosts of his own making.

Back in the upstate farmhouse, the morning sun broke through the autumn fog, illuminating the rolling green hills in a blanket of golden light. Elena sat on the porch swing with Lily curled up beside her, reading a favorite storybook out loud. The air was crisp, clean, and entirely free of fear.

Elena closed the book gently, kissing the top of her daughter’s head as Lily smiled up at her with bright, untroubled eyes. They had walked through the fire of deception, control, and betrayal, emerging on the other side unbroken. The glass house had shattered into a million pieces, leaving room for a real, breathing life to finally take root beneath an open, boundless sky.
