Chapter 5

The morning sun broke through the smog of the city, casting a pale, clinical light across the breakfast bar. Julian had already left for his office downtown, his departure signaled only by the silent closing of the heavy elevator doors. Elena sat at the marble counter, stirring a cup of black coffee she had no intention of drinking. Lily sat beside her, picking quietly at a piece of toast, still subdued from the trauma of the previous evening.

The secure intercom chimed softly. Elena pressed the receiver, her muscles tensing. "Yes?"

"Mrs. Sterling? It’s Marcus Vance," a calm, weathered voice replied through the speaker. "Building security. I need to speak with you regarding last night's incident in the east hallway. It’s urgent."

Elena exchanged a quick, cautious glance with Lily before buzzing the guard up. Marcus Vance had worked the night shift in the high-rise for five years. He was a quiet, observant man in his late fifties with kind eyes and a posture that hinted at a past life in law enforcement. When the private elevator chimed and the doors slid open, Marcus stepped out, holding a small digital flash drive in his calloused hand.

"I shouldn't be doing this, Mrs. Sterling," Marcus began immediately, keeping his voice low as he glanced down the empty hallway. "Mr. Julian is my employer, and he pays well for absolute discretion. But what happened to your little girl last night... that crossed a line I can't ignore."

Elena motioned for him to sit, her hands gripping the edge of the counter. "What do you mean, Marcus?"

"I was reviewing the corridor logs from yesterday afternoon," Marcus said, placing the flash drive on the marble counter between them. "Mr. Julian didn't lose that diamond brooch. I saw him on camera. He walked into Miss Lily’s room himself, empty-handed, and came out three minutes later. He planted it in her toy chest deliberately."

Lily gasped softly, burying her face in Elena’s sleeve. Elena felt a hot wave of vindication wash over her. She picked up the flash drive, feeling its lightweight plastic casing as if it were a loaded weapon.

"Why are you giving this to me, Marcus?" Elena asked, looking deeply into his tired eyes. "Julian will fire you. He might even destroy you legally if he finds out."

Marcus offered a grim, weary smile. "I have a granddaughter the same age as Lily, Mrs. Sterling. Some things are worth more than a paycheck. If you take this to the right authorities, it’ll break his stranglehold. But you have to act fast. Men like Julian don't wait to be cornered; they strike first."
