Chapter 12

The federal district courthouse in downtown Manhattan was a fortress of heavy stone, neoclassical columns, and blinding camera flashes. Media outlets had dubbed it "The Sterling Divorce Trial of the Century," broadcasting every legal maneuver across national news networks. Inside courtroom 404, the air was dense with anticipation as Judge Harrison—a notoriously strict, incorruptible magistrate with a reputation for zero tolerance—presided over the emergency injunction hearing.

Julian Sterling sat at the defense table, flanked by a high-priced team of three corporate attorneys in identical charcoal suits. Julian himself wore a sharp black double-breasted suit and a black silk bow tie, maintaining his icy composure despite the hollow shadows under his eyes. He hadn't slept properly in days; the loss of his corporate chairmanship and the freezing of his accounts had dealt a devastating blow to his untouchable status.

Across the aisle, Elena sat beside David Thorne. She wore a simple, elegant navy blue dress, her posture upright and serene. She didn't look like a woman running from a fight; she looked like a survivor reclaiming her rightful place in the world.

"Mr. Sterling’s legal team argues that the asset freeze is disproportionate and disrupts ongoing corporate operations," Judge Harrison stated, his voice booming through the oak-paneled room as he reviewed the case files. "However, the court has also reviewed the digital evidence submitted by Mrs. Sterling’s counsel—specifically, the hallway security logs and audio transcripts regarding the deliberate framing of a minor child for psychological leverage."

The courtroom murmured softly. Julian’s lead attorney stood up to object, but Judge Harrison raised a single hand, silencing him instantly.

"Counsel, save your breath," the judge said coldly. "This court does not look kindly upon individuals who weaponize familial trust for corporate extortion. Furthermore, the foundation board’s independent audit has confirmed systematic financial misconduct and embezzlement of charitable funds by Mr. Sterling over the past four years."

Julian’s head snapped up, his immaculate composure finally cracking. A micro-expression of absolute panic flickered across his face before he forced it back behind a mask of stony defiance.

"The protective order remains permanent," Judge Harrison declared, bringing his gavel down with a sharp, echoing crack. "Joint custody is revoked, granting full legal and physical custody to Mrs. Sterling. Furthermore, Mr. Sterling’s corporate assets and personal accounts remain frozen pending criminal investigation for financial fraud and child endangerment."
