Chapter 4

Elena closed the manila folder with a sharp snap, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She refused to let Julian see her shake, forcing her chin up to meet his predatory gaze head-on. The dim lamplight cast long, jagged shadows across the expensive Persian rug, framing them like duelists in a tragedy of their own making.

"You’ve been tracking me," Elena said, her voice remarkably steady despite the storm inside her. "Every call, every meeting with my lawyer, every coffee with a friend. You’ve treated this marriage like a hostile corporate merger from the very beginning."

Julian took a slow sip of his drink, the ice cubes clinking softly against the crystal glass. He stepped into the room, closing the distance between them without rushing. "Marriage is a contract, Elena. And when one party starts looking for loopholes, the other party has a fiduciary duty to protect the assets. Lily is my asset, just as this penthouse is. You signed away your right to independent rebellion the day you said yes."

"She is our daughter, not a stock option!" Elena snapped, stepping forward. "And you framed her—a seven-year-old child—just to break me down psychologically. What kind of monster does that?"

Julian’s expression didn't flicker. "A pragmatic one. Lily is sensitive, yes, but she learns obedience quickly when the stakes are high. As for the brooch, it was never lost. It was simply moved to a secure location, waiting for the right moment to teach you both a lesson about loyalty."

Elena felt a cold fury wash over her, replacing panic with icy clarity. Julian wasn't just cruel; he was methodical, operating under the delusion that human affection could be managed with balance sheets and security clearances. But he had made one critical miscalculation: he underestimated the lengths a mother would go to protect her child from a gilded cage.

"You think you hold all the cards," Elena said quietly, stepping closer until she could smell the expensive scotch on his breath. "You think your money and your cameras make you invincible. But you forgot one thing, Julian. People who build glass houses forget that they can easily be shattered from the inside."

Julian’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, a micro-expression of genuine unease crossing his features before he masked it with a cold smirk. "Try whatever you like, Elena. But remember, the system belongs to me."
