CHAPTER 9: The Trial of Faith

A local fisherman, who had grown fond of Thomas and the boys, sprinted up the cliffside path to warn them.
“Thomas! You need to go!” the fisherman breathed heavily, standing at the doorway. “There are men in suits downtown asking for you. They have weapons, Thomas.”
Thomas’s heart sank. He looked back at Leo, who was holding Gabriel tightly in his arms, fear returning to his eyes once more.
“We can’t keep running, Thomas,” Leo said, his voice trembling but resolute. “If we run now, they will just follow us somewhere else.”
Thomas looked at the two young boys. Leo was right. Running would only turn Gabriel’s gift into a lifelong curse of fear and hiding.

“You’re right, Leo,” Thomas said softly, taking a deep breath. “It ends here. But we won't fight them with violence. We will stand our ground with truth.”
Thomas led the boys out onto the front porch of the cottage, waiting quietly as the black SUVs navigated up the narrow gravel driveway and came to a stop in front of the house.
