CHAPTER 7: The Unspoken Bond

One evening, as a gentle storm rolled in over the bay, Leo sat by the fireplace in the cottage, watching Thomas stoke the embers.

“Mr. Thomas?” Leo asked softly.

“Yes, Leo?”

“Why did you help us? That day at the café, you didn't know us. You could have thought I was just a beggar lying to you.”

Thomas placed the iron poker down and turned to look at the boy. He sat down in the wooden rocker next to Leo’s chair.

“When you lose something vital, Leo—like your ability to walk, or someone you love—it’s easy to shut your heart down to protect yourself from feeling pain again,” Thomas said softly. “When I looked at you that day, I didn't see a liar. I saw a boy who was sacrificing everything to protect his family. Your love for Gabriel restored my heart long before his touch restored my legs.”

Leo swallowed hard, his eyes glistening in the firelight. He leaned over and wrapped his small arms around Thomas’s waist. Thomas wrapped his arms around the boy, holding him tight.

In that small cottage, amidst the howling wind outside, a real family was born—not bound by blood, but forged through sacrifice, trust, and shared purpose.
